Set atop a hill in the Ourika Valley and offering breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains, it’s hard to believe that Kasbah Bab Ourika is little more than a 45-minute drive from Marrakech. With just 26 luxurious rooms and suites, a secluded pool, hammam and lovely terraced gardens – this boutique hotel offers the perfect spot to get away from it all.
More impressive still, in light of the hotel’s luxury, is their commitment to sustainability. Constructed from packed earth, using traditional Berber methods, the hotel blends in with its natural environment and is provided with natural insulation year-round. This, coupled with the fact that there are both solar panels and water recycling facilities on site, makes this Chic Retreat very eco-friendly indeed.
Dinner is served in the romantic restaurant or out on the patio or terraces with spectacular views. Here, chefs source the freshest and most local ingredients from the kitchen garden and surrounding villages. As such, the menu of traditional Berber, Arabic and international cuisine changes frequently, but it is always delicious, incorporating both traditional European fare and classic Moroccan favourites.
There are 26 individually designed guest rooms and suites in Kasbah Bab Ourika, each decorated with traditional Moroccan furniture, artworks and materials along with more modern luxury touches. Beds can be twins or king size and are fitted with Maison de Blanc Egyptian cotton sheets and the plumpest of pillows. Most rooms have views of the Atlas Mountains and many of them have sitting areas, fireplaces and private balconies or terraces with outdoor seating or sun loungers.
Make the most of the peace and quiet with a relaxing day by the swimming pool, unwinding in the hammam, or booking in for a pampering massage.
Alternatively, there are plenty of things to do in the local area. Visit the Berber market in nearby Tnine Ourika, go up in a hot air balloon, take a camel ride, or visit the local farms where the raw ingredients for Morocco's famous perfumes are grown.
Of course, it would be remiss not to explore the Atlas Mountains during your stay. As well as hiking in the mountains and around the Salt National Park, the hotel can organise mountain biking, rafting, horse riding and even skiing on the snowy peaks of the High Atlas.
Meanwhile, Marrakech is just a 45-minute drive away and offers a wealth of things to do, see and eat. Explore the famous Jemaa El-Fna square, haggles in the souks, or visit the stunning 14th-century Ben Youssef Medersa Quranic school.
