South of Florence, this Tuscan
city was a place of importance since Etruscan times. Since then, it has been a place of culture, where people came to share ideas, art and the good things in life. Perched on a hillside, it is a striking sight and definitely worth a stay to discover its delights.Where to go
Arezzo is the home of Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca’s finest frescoes - see them in the church of San Francesco di Arezzo. Explore the palazzos that line the Piazza Grande. Visit the monthly antiques fair and perhaps pick up a treasure. Catch a performance in the Roman amphitheatre and have a look in the neighbouring Roman museum. Enjoy the annual ‘Saracen Joust’ medieval festival. Shop for fashion and leatherwork. Find a cafe and enjoy an aperitivo or three.
Food & Drink
They eat well in Tuscany, and the same is true of Arezzo. To try authentic, traditional cuisine, we recommend Gastronomia Il Cervo (Via Cavour 38). It might not seem like fine dining, but locals swear by the large plates of local favourites, ideal for sharing. Vineria Ciao (Via G. Garibaldi 16) offers great homestyle Italian cooking, an impressive wine list and staff that will fuss over you.
As one of Tuscany’s larger towns, Arezzo has a thriving nightlife scene. For a real slice of Tuscan nightlife, Caffè dei Costanti (Piazza San Francesco) is a fine place for anything from a pre-dinner aperitivo to a late night wine. Similarly, Il Casale di Pieve a Quarto (Localita Pieve a Quarto) has a wonderful outdoor section for evening drinks into the early hours.
