Manoir Laurette is a charming 19th-century house located in the beautiful hamlet of Lorette on the border of Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne, France’s main wine region. This exquisite Chic Retreat has just 4 boutique hotel rooms which are overflowing with quirkiness, character and faded glamour. The perfectly positioned pool and tennis court make this exceptional hideaway the perfect mid-week or weekend break. Extra beds can be added to the rooms but we feel this romantic escape would be appreciated more by couples.
Surrounded by vineyards and fields filled with sunflowers, this Chic Retreat is just 45 minutes from St Emilion and an hour from Bordeaux.
During the summer months, a full à la carte breakfast is served in the folk art dining room and in the winter by the open fireplace. Passionate about food, the team at the Manoir ensure that wherever possible the ingredients are homegrown and locally sourced – eggs are laid by their own hens. Award-winning Joe's Tea is on offer, and their fragrant coffee is blended nearby in small batches. Butter pastries are fresh every morning – complemented by local jams and honey, they're simply irresistible. And crunchy homemade granola is the perfect match for the local, creamy yoghurts. Smoked salmon with scrambled eggs and pancakes with crispy bacon are just some of the other choices on the menu, but you'll find it difficult to choose because everything is mouthwateringly good.
On select evenings, homemade pizza is whipped up in the wood-fired oven, and a selection of appetising tapas is available at lunchtime. There's also a licensed bar on site, pouring local tipples and artisan gin – with over 25 brands to choose from in their juniper emporium, you'll be spoilt for choice. And there's a wine boutique located down in the original cellar too. Fancy sampling a selection? They host tastings, where an array of regional wines are opened, with a focus on natural and biodynamic varieties.
Each of the 4 bedrooms has a bohemian vibe with pretty antiques and objets. The king-size beds boast handmade cashmere mattresses adorned with crisp bed linen from the White Company, and the bathrooms are shiny and new. Bathrobes and slippers come as standard, as do the organic Bramley bath and body products. Plus complimentary tea and Nespresso coffee, wine from a neighbouring vineyard, and artisan chocolates. A wonderfully romantic retreat.
Surrounded by Italian Cypress trees and fragrant lavender beds, the pool is in an idyllic position. The tennis court is floodlit and if you've forgotten your racket don't worry there's free racket hire here. For those fancying a little pampering, the Apple Barn spa is the ideal spot: located next to the koi pond, the gifted therapist is on hand for treatments, and can create a bespoke blend of organic essential oils to complement an extensive choice of massages. To relax even further, there's a wood-fired hot tub in the garden – encircled by trees, it's a scenic spot for a soak.
The butterfly meadow is a beautiful spot for a picnic or you might prefer to jump on one of the retro bikes and head into one of the fields or one of the interweaving waterways of the canal du midi. You’re right in the middle of France's main wine-tasting region, the steepled church in Lorette is a few minute's walk away and you can dine on champagne and oysters in trendy Cap Ferret.
The picturesque bastide towns of Monségur and Duras are just minutes away as are hidden treasures of brocantes, medieval villages, markets and cafés. We recommend you hire a car so you can explore the region - St Emilion is only 45 minutes away and Bordeaux just an hour.
How to get there
On the toll road (E72/A62) from either Bordeaux or Toulouse take the exit for LA REOLE. Drive for 3/4minutes. Reach Mongauzy and just after the bakery on your left, take a left at the church (slightly set back from the road) signposted MONSEGUR (there is a restaurant/bar also on the corner where you turn). If you reach the petrol station in Mongauzy you have driven too far. Drive for 2minutes following the road round to the right and reach a T-junction, take a left and about 200yards along take a right signed ‘l’eglise Lorette’. Drive for 5minutes, upon reaching Lorette take the first right by the church signed 'St Bazeille' (if you drive past the tennis court you have missed the turning) The pistachio green gated entrance is on your left, which will be open and has a blue and gold ‘Manoir Lorette’ sign.
