Château Les Merles perfectly embodies the French daydream: vineyards, wonderful food, and a stunning countryside setting. Located in the Périgord-Dordogne region of southwest France, the 17th-century castle is a superb hideaway just a short way from the town of Bergerac. Understated, stylish, and with attentive staff, it makes for an excellent choice.
The historic exterior gives way to sleek and modern décor; rooms are minimalist, with a monochrome palette save for the odd bright pop of colour. The staff here are charming and will go out of their way to ensure you have a good stay.
Les Merles offers local seasonal dishes with a twist, with much of the produce sourced from the château's own vegetable garden. There's also an excellent selection of wines from the Bergerac area. The restaurant is located in what was once the barn: dine there or alfresco. There's also a lounge area and a courtyard terrace for drinks and snacks.
In the mornings, a buffet breakfast is served.
There are a range of room types available from doubles to suites, where original features mingle with slick, contemporary décor. The 2-bed apartment is a good choice for families, with a living space and a kitchen. The villas are also excellent options if travelling with the little ones or as a group.
There’s a outdoor pool surrounded by flora, tennis courts, and even a 9-hole golf course. But if you'd prefer, take part in a cooking lesson to learn some new culinary tips and tricks to take home with you.
