ONAR is unlike any other boutique hotel or holiday house we have come across. ONAR is neither a boutique hotel, nor is it simply a self-catering Chic Retreat, it is a magical experience, surrounded by nature on the Island of Andros, Greece. ONAR means 'to dream' in Greek and here in the 18 acres of protected wetlands of Ahla the 9 simple stone cottages (all built with local materials) and surrounding natural beauty make it is easy to believe that dreams do come true. The owners vision and philosophy is clear to everyone who visits; to create a unique experience, close to nature, in a stunning location. The owners strive to make ONAR as eco-friendly as possible and are constantly seeking ways of becoming better by developing alternative forms of energy and ecological activities.
ONAR has been built near where the river meets the sea at Ahla beach, where children can run around freely, splash in the sea and build sandcastles. There are many things to do around ONAR; hiking by the river through scent plants and giant trees amidst partridges, pheasants, hares, eels and turtles. For those who like a challenge climb to Vourkoti, the nearby village which sits at the highest point of the island. Day trips can be organised to cosmopolitan Chora with neoclassical mansions and the Museum of Modern Art or to Vori beach with a real ship wreck, the Byzantine monasteries of Agios Nikolaos and Panahrantou or the captivating beaches of Andros and its traditional villages. Children will love the treasure games and other educational activities that are organised. They may like to help pick the fruits and vegetables from the farm. Book a boat trip and discover the hidden secrets of Andros which has the longest coastline in Cyclades. Yoga sessions take place in the Mongolian Yurt, but we think that there is nothing better than Yoga on the beach by the sea.
Simplicity and flavours are the name of the game when it comes to the dining experience at ONAR. Local ingredients and nature set the menu at the big family table under the trees. Traditional recipes are followed using organic products picked from the farm, catch of the day and fresh dairy and eggs from the nearby farms. The fruit juices are squeezed from freshly picked fruits and cakes and breads are baked by the surrounding neighbours. Guests enjoy this magical feast together enjoying everything nature has to offer.
