Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy is a quirky design hotel in Amsterdam’s trendy Eastern Docklands Area. The building itself has an intriguing history: built as an emigrant hotel back in 1920, it has since been used as a refugee centre, detention centre and artist studio, before being converted into a hotel at the end of 2004.
In keeping with its eclectic past, the Chic Retreat continues to play host to a number of exhibitions, installations and events, with over 50 designers and artists contributing to the hotel.
There is a lovely restaurant on site serving both a lavish buffet and à la carte breakfast, in addition to lunch and dinner. In fair weather, tuck into your meal on the canal-side terrace, which is the prime spot for sipping on a cocktail as you watch the sunset.
Quirky and vibrant, no two of this boutique hotel’s rooms are quite the same. Options range from compact but trendy ‘1 star’ picks to grander ‘5 star’ rooms, each conceptualised by well-known Dutch architects and designers (the star ratings are as detailed by the hotel rather than the official rating system). It’s worth noting that the cheapest options come with shared bathrooms (though they have bathrobes to see you there in comfort), and some private bathrooms are open-plan.
Lounge in the many nooks and crannies dotted around the hotel, or browse the well-stocked library’s expansive collection of art books. There is an exciting events programme including concerts, film screenings and art exhibitions. Should you wish to host your own event, there are plenty of meeting spaces available for hire.
Sightseeing in Amsterdam is a must, with the jaw-dropping Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank’s House only some of the intrigues on offer. The hotel is only a 10-minute tram ride from Amsterdam’s Central Station, making it the perfect hub for your city break.
