It’s not everyday you find hotel with a sweeping public park for a driveway, but this isn’t just any hotel. Nestled in the blooming Oosterpark, Arena is a rather hip place to lay your head. Previously a Catholic orphanage, traces of the 19th-century building’s unusual past still remain; from the original chapel and stained-glass windows, to the huge brick exterior.
It’s not all centuries-old charm however; the hotel décor blends old and new beautifully, with grand staircase and wood-panelling in the lobby contrasting with minimalist rooms and quirky grass-topped roofing. Despite it’s green surroundings, you’re just a short tram ride from the key sights at Hotel Arena - the tranquil park setting is a wonderful retreat after the bustle of the city centre.
The Park Café-Restaurant is located in the Oosterpark - a beautiful setting for some excellent food. With a focus on vegetables, dishes are made using fresh ingredients and herbs grown in their very own herb garden. Weather permitting, there is a lovely terrace to enjoy your meal on, or head inside and dine in the relaxed lounge area or bistro restaurant. In the mornings, a buffet breakfast is served.
Airy and open plan, rooms are styled in a minimalist fashion, complete with comfy beds, the odd exposed stone wall, and the occasional dash of colour. Embracing the building’s quirks, rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes; while some feature high or beamed ceilings, others have large bay windows or two tiers. Some rooms are suitable for those less mobile, please contact the hotel ahead of arrival.
Nature-lovers and outdoorsy types are well-set here, with the Oosterpark providing an excellent opportunity for leisurely strolls. There’s even a tennis court if you’re feeling active, and bikes are available for rent.
The city centre is within easy reach too - just a short whizz on the tram will take you to the key sights. Alternatively, the nearby Utrechtsestraat and Javastraat are home to some rather lovely boutiques and restaurants.
