This classic Portuguese farmhouse in the Algarve has been transformed into a peaceful boutique hotel. Just 20 minutes from Faro airport, the hideaway has a relaxed boho-chic vibe. There's a wealth of things to do and see in the area, and all ages are welcome (but it's worth noting there's an adult-only pool and collection of rooms).
If you're a foodie this is the place for you: light and airy on-site restaurant À Terra will likely be an integral part of your stay, where rustic, homemade dishes designed for sharing are prepared with love and served throughout the day. The wood-fired oven and Josper grill take centre stage, and are used for steak, pizza, and traditional plates such as black pork ribs, all prepared using local ingredients such as olive oil, “flor de sal” (pure salt), figs, aubergines and tomatoes, and herbs and vegetables picked from the kitchen garden.
And Laranjal eatery is the ideal evening spot to enjoy a creative menu that blends the flavours of the Algarve with other Mediterranean influences. Pass through the walkway lined with orange trees to reach the dining spot (in Portuguese, laranjal means orangery). Watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen as they deftly create dishes using catch of the day (trips are made daily to Olhão market). Note: open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday, April to November.
The 55 light and spacious rooms (including 24 suites) are spread across several buildings. Timeless interiors of white walls and fabrics mix with accents of pale colour; wood, wicker and rope are used to great effect throughout. There's a Nespresso machine in each room, as well as Molton Brown products, plus sun hats and a wicker beach bag to use during your stay. And there are nice little touches in all of the rooms including candles, homemade biscuits and fresh flowers from the garden.
If you're after an array of things to do, this is the ideal choice. Yoga, hiking, tennis, golf, fishing, boating and biking are just some of the sports you can choose from. More leisurely options include pottery classes, birdwatching or a trip into Tavira, a charming town 20 kilometres eastwards. Water babies can join a boat trip and search for dolphins and other marine life, or head to nearby Fuseta Island (Ilha da Armona), a car-free, beach paradise.
Experiences such as food tours can also be organised: take a ride to Culatra Island and visit oyster farms, learn about clam harvesting and prepare some back at the hotel kitchen, spend a day at a nearby farm and be taught how to bake Algarvian bread, or be guided round Faro on a petisco (tapas) outing.
Back at the hotel, there's an AstroTurf tennis court; a pro can be booked if you'd like a lesson. Or head to the gym if that's more your thing. And if you prefer a more relaxing time, pull up a lounger at one of the seasonally heated swimming pools or enjoy a pampering massage in the garden. Wellness programmes can be arranged too.
