Chateau Marteret - Gascony, Mid Pyrenees, France

About this Chic Retreat

The extraordinary and magical Chateau Marteret is located in the south west of France in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the region of Gascony.  Full of natural beauty this area is comparable to the green hills of Umbria.  Situated on a 60 acre estate this luxury chateau has been transformed, with the help of over 20 artists and designers, into a very special place to rent.  The owner, Henry Nold, has succeeded in creating a unique place filled with works of art, design and space. Dostoyevsky's statement that 'beauty will save the world' is evident throughout Le Marteret. Henry is passionate about crop circles and the mystery that surrounds them as well as light, enlightment and lightness shown through the various lighting installations throughout the chateau.  The golden egg sits at the entrance and the egg-shaped skylight is featured in the stairwell as well as the ovoid light creations came from the work of Austrian naturalist Viktor Schauberger who praised the qualities of the egg shape which inspired many of his technical creations.  Chateau Marteret is dedicated to this awe-inspiring inventor and his attempts to use zero-point energy as engine fuel.

Accommodation

Seeing is believing when it comes to this extraordinary chateau.  Chateau Marteret is for exclusive rental only and sleeps up to 16 people.  Seven rooms are situated in the main building filled with lighting designs and furniture from famous architects and artists including Spencer Fung, Eriko Horiki, Antonio Gaudi, Nestor Perkal to name a few.  Each of the rooms are different and have different features; Cottage Room has a bed make from 4cm thick oakwood, Snow White Room has its own hallway and bathroom and the contrast between the limestone floor and the red and green glass tiles underlain with gold leaf is simply stunning.  The Dovecote stands just 15m behind the chateau and is the perfect little hideaway for two people wanting privacy from the rest of the party. Each room key is the design of a crop circle.

Activities

There are plenty of activities on offer in the local area surrounding and at the Chateau Marteret; horse riding (there are 3 horses at the chateau), archery, boules, fishing, cycling, table tennis and trampolining.  You might like to walk round the estate and admire the biotopes on the agricultural land installed by the owner shortly after he bought the chateau.

Dining

The kitchen at Chateau Marteret has been fitted in line with the motto 'good things in life still exist'.  The furniture has been made out of thick maple and the stainless steel shelves were designed by architect Spencer Fung.  London architect Simon Conder designed the adjoining kitchen.  Guests have the option of self-catering (in which case they have full use of everything on offer both in the kitchen and the utility room) or can choose for their week to be fully catered which includes a raw food buffet offering food in its purest and most organic form.  The meals served are carefully created to ensure that they are packed with enzymes and goodness and there is a choice of fresh organic juices three times a day.  Those who appreciate design will enjoy using the carved chairs designed by art nouveau architect Antonio Gaudi.
