Boutique hotels in Provence
If you’re looking for boutique hotels in southern France, our great selection of small luxury hotels and B&Bs in Provence is sure to inspire you. Famed for its pretty villages and postcard scenes of lavender fields and vineyards, rural Provence makes for an idyllic holiday destination. It’s also easy to get there with 5 airports (Avignon, Nimes, Marseille, Nice, Toulon-Hyeres) and direct trains from London to Avignon. When you arrive, hiring a car is the best way to make the most of the region.
With our collection of boutique villas, chateaux and small luxury hotels in Provence - many of which are within easy driving distance of Avignon and Nimes - you’re bound to find the perfect place to stay. Van Gogh found inspiration in the light and landscapes of Provencal market town St Remy de Provence so why not stay at gorgeous Provencal guest house La Maison du Village or luxury hotel Mas de L’Amarine, once the home to contemporary French artist Roger Bezombes, and one of our recommended boutique hotels in Provence. Don’t miss the Wednesday morning market, the Van Gogh trail of the surrounding area which covers the key locations of his work, or dinner at Michelin-star restaurant La Maison Jaune.
Half an hour’s drive southwest is Arles, host of the annual world famous summer Arles photography festival where exhibitions of work are held at venues around the town. Our pick of places to stay is L'Hotel Particulier in La Roquette district, which is a 10 minute walk from the amphitheatre. For fine dining, eat in the hotel’s Le 33 restaurant or, for a more casual bite, try La Gueule du Loup where Provencal specialties on the menu include red mullet and lamb baked in herbs.
From here, you can head north via Nimes to Uzès, another gorgeous market town (market days are Wednesday and Saturday when you can stock up olive oil, herbs and jars of thyme-flavoured honey) with winding medieval streets, outdoor cafes and chic boutiques. Stop for a grilled tartine lunch at popular Restaurant Terroirs on the main Place aux Herbes and nab a shady table under the umbrellas outside. Our pick of accommodation in this area includes small, luxury B&B L’Albiousse near Uzès and La Maison d’Ulysse in the village of Baron, surrounded by olive trees and green hills.
If you’re a real foodie, perhaps consider Chateau de Massillan in the village of Uchaux which combines a historic castle setting, contemporary interiors and a gastronomic restaurant with a perfectly paired food and wine menu. Or, with an equally unbeatable setting, how about the very pretty Le Mas du Temps in Hameau de Serres (part of the city of Carpentras), a 3 room boutique hotel in Provence with pale blue shutters at the windows, an outdoor swimming pool and a terrace where you can start the day with breakfast surrounded by lavender trees and overlooking Mont Ventoux.
Sometimes a trip to Provence isn’t about visiting the region’s flagship villages but discovering little, hidden away hilltop towns such as Menerbes and Roussillon (both under an hour’s drive from Avignon), which sits atop a red cliff. Walk through the ancient belfry entrance into the fortified Castrum for great views of the village. Just outside Roussillon, you’ll find Le Mas de Rosemarie, a hamlet of 4 stylish houses (rent them individually or together when they sleep up to 22), which is a stones’ throw from several excellent restaurants. These include Aux Fines Herbes, a contemporary restaurant in Goult and the romantic La Ferme de la Huppe, on the away to Gordes and Le Fournil, which is built into the rock in Bonnieux where you can eat modern French food outside in the village square in the summer.
Aix-en-Provence is an hours’ drive away and makes a lovely day trip (if you want to stay longer check into La Maison d’Aix, a Provencal boutique hotel in the Mazarin district where all the chicest townhouses are located). Stop for lunch at Paul Cézanne’s local, Les Deux Garcons, before walking up to Atelier de Cezanne, the artist’s last studio which is still exactly as he left it. Other sights not to miss include the Archbishop’s Palace (the hub of the Aix arts festival in July) and Aix’s main gallery Musee Granet. Nearer Nice, Mougins and Vence are two other towns worthy of a stop-over. Wherever you decide to stay, our collection of Chic Retreats in Provence is bound to feature somewhere to suit you.
