Holbeck Ghyll - Windermere, England

About this Chic Retreat

Holbeck Ghyll Country House Hotel is a small luxury hotel offering spectacular views of Lake Windermere and the Lakeland Fells. The chic country style works well in this stunning natural setting, as do the more contemporary additions with their simple, inviting decor. Guests can either stay in the Main House, or for a little more privacy, stay in one of the rooms and suites in the grounds. The area is great for walking, hiking and cycling and after a rejuvenating trip in the fresh Cumbrian air, guests can return for some pampering in the Holbeck Ghyll Health Spa. To round off a perfect day, indulge in the fine cuisine of their Michelin-starred restaurant before retiring to bed for a wonderful night's sleep. This gorgeous retreat was recently chosen as the setting for a film with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon due to the great location and interiors.

Accommodation

The 23 rooms and suites at Holbeck Ghyll are divided between the Main House and The Lodge with additional individual suites in the grounds. Nearly all of the traditional, country-style rooms in the Main House afford breathtaking lake views. Upholstered armchairs, four-posters, and fine draperies create a classic ambience, with fresh flowers in each room. All of these rooms have Egyptian cotton sheets, TVs with Satellite and DVD players, CD players, a complimentary decanter of sherry and hairdryers. A later addition to the more traditional rooms in the Main House are the 6 rooms in The Lodge, 45 yards from the Main House. These rooms interconnect if required, perfect for larger groups or families and enjoy spectacular views over Lake Windermere, each with their own private balcony or terrace. Choose from a range of styles, from a simple contemporary feel to a traditional country style with large wooden four-poster beds, floral canopies and fire places. These rooms enjoy all the extras of the Main House rooms plus mini-bar / fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. The bathrooms are spacious, with separate shower cubicles, and some of these rooms have a kitchenette for a little more independence.

The Shieling is a large Lakeland stone house, a short walk from the Main House with 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. This stand-alone house is perfect for the independent traveller with a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge-dining area and a small balcony which leads to a private garden. For those who want to stay a little connected to the outside world, WiFi is available. Another independent cottage is Madison House which has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large glass-fronted lounge, a kitchen and a utility room, great for families, groups of friends, or simply as a large room for couples. Unwind in the private hot tub out in the front-garden overlooking the lake. For a truly romantic weekend, we recommend the fabulous Miss Potter Suite. This detached suite has 325 sq ft of living space and a 245 sq ft private terrace complete with hot tub, sun loungers and dining table and spectacular views from every room. All of the bathrooms at this chic retreat have baths and showers and the Miss Potter Suite has a particularly spacious bathroom with large walk-in shower, separate bath, under-floor heating and flat screen TV. Sumptuous Penhaligons bath products, bathrobes, towels and slippers are provided.

Activities

The Lake District has been an inspiration to some of Britain's finest artists and poets, and you need only stroll down to the lake to experience the dramatic beauty of this beautiful corner of England. Majestic mountains, glimmering waters and lush greenery abound, and guests will certainly be drawn to walk, cycle, hike or drive around the pretty landscape. Take a cruise across one of the many lakes, visit the local villages for afternoon tea and some shopping or take a day out to play some golf. There are some great spots for mountaineering close by and fishing and pony trekking can be arranged.

On the Holbeck Ghyll grounds, guests can explore the vast gardens or head to the Holbeck Ghyll Health Spa, which has a sauna, steam room, power shower, relaxation room and Technogym exercise room and a good menu of beauty treatments, massages and holistic therapies. For those who would rather exercise outdoors, there is an all-weather tennis court, croquet lawn, putting green and jogging trail. This chic retreat even has its own boutique selling Barbour clothing, books, guides, souvenirs, postcards and Penhaligon's products. By evening, guests can cosy up in the plump armchairs of the lounges by an open-fire with a glass of fine wine from Holbeck Ghyll's award-winning wine list.

Dining

Holbeck Ghyll Restaurant is one of only 2 Michelin-starred restaurants in Windermere. Dine in the majestic Oak-Panelled dining room, Terrace dining room, or on the outside terrace to enjoy the lake and mountain views - the perfect setting for lunch or dinner. The menu offers a mix of English and French cuisine with dishes such as Roast Squab Pigeon with Chouchroute and Madeira Sauce, Roasted Brill with Apple, Potato, Celery and Cider Foam and for pudding, Nougat Glace with Passion Fruit Sorbet and Mango Parcels. Vegetarians need not be disheartened; there are some great meat-free options such as Gallete of Soused Vegetables with Asparagus and White Bean Velouté. With over 280 wines on the list, with one to suit any price range, guests can enjoy wines from all over the world.
