Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy and with its olive groves and vineyards it’s easy to see why. From the mountains of Perugia to the hill top town of Orvieto, our collection of boutique hotels and luxury apartments in Umbria has something to suit every budget and style. The best airport to fly into is Perugia and then to explore the region fully, we recommend hiring a car.

Perugia is Umbria’s capital and largest town (it’s also roughly a 2 hour drive from Florence or Rome) and boasts a historic centre, the Gothic Palazzo dei Priori and an annual international jazz festival in July as its main attractions. Our boutique hotels in Umbria include Casamassima, a working agriturismo farm 15 minutes outside Perugia and a medieval castle, Castello di Petroia, which dates back to the 9th-century. Both have idyllic countryside surroundings and offer a peaceful escape from the crowds. While you’re in town, stop for a slice of pizza at popular locals joint, osteria La Lumera, see the sunset over a glass of vino bianco at Punto di Vista cocktail bar and join the locals in their nightly passeggiata along Corso Vannucci. Osteria A Priori, a wine and olive shop with a restaurant at the back, is also an excellent option for dinner (book in advance if you can). All the ingredients in the simple dishes - charcuterie platters with cheese, honey and nuts, pasta with black truffles and olive oil - are local.

Assisi and Gubbio

From Perugia, do a day trip to Assisi an hour’s drive away. It’s famous as the home town of St. Francis the patron saint of Italy and you can visit his tomb in the impressive Saint Francis Basilica. Head also to the main Piazza del Comune and then Piazza di San Rufino to see the Duomo and climb to the ruins of the castle fortress Rocca Maggiore for great views. Then leave town and head north towards Gubbio, which sits at the foot of Mount Ingino. Our collection of boutique hotels in Umbria features Borgo di Carpiano, a retreat comprised of 3 stone houses situated between both towns, La Cuccagna, a restored farmhouse surrounded by 11 acres of countryside: choose from 4 rooms in the main building, a self-catering apartment in the old cow shed or a detached studio suite with a kitchenette that’s perfect for a couple or family. Nearby the 10 room boutique hotel Locanda del Gallo has a Moorish spa and infinity pool and is strategically placed within easy reach of Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia.

Spend time in Gubbio wandering around the medieval streets and Piazza Grande, pay a visit to the Roman amphitheatre and if you happen to be there on the third Sunday of the month, don’t miss the antiques market at Loggei dei Tiratori. You’ll find truffles incorporated into dishes at many restaurants but Taverno del Lupo, where you can feast on lasagne with truffle shavings, and the out-of-town, family-run Trattoria Da Baffone, whose owner apparently goes out truffle hunting in the Gubbio hills daily during the season, are both worth trying.

There are plenty of gorgeous spots south of Perugia worth staying too. Drive via the walled village of Todi (stop for a morning coffee in one of the cafes that line the medieval piazza) for an hour and you’ll reach the hill town of Orvieto with its stunning Cappella di San Brizio duomo (the facade was 300 years in the making and inside, there are noteworthy frescoes on the ceiling). Right next to the duomo, you can grab a bite to eat at Vinosus restaurant which has a panoramic terrace, or alternatively book ahead for a table at Il Saltapicchio, just off the beaten tourist track.

Stay a few minutes’ drive away at another of our boutique hotels in Umbria, the very special La Badia di Orvieto. Built in the 6th-century as an abbey, it has been sympathetically restored and transformed into an intimate luxury Umbrian hotel. Lovely towns to visit within easy driving distance include Spoleto to the east which hosts the internationally renowned Spoleto cultural festivalfrom the end of June until mid-July where the programme features opera, dance, music, art and theatre, performances at venues around town. The small wine town of Montefalco and the gastronomic town of Norcia are also both worth putting on your itinerary. The latter is famous for its black truffles, mountain cheeses and wild boar products and there’s a food festival in the main square every February and March.
