About this Chic Retreat

Castello di Vicarello is a medieval castle dating back to 1100, which has been turned into a luxury country house hotel unlike any other you will find in Tuscany. Guests feel like they are staying in someone's home, and in this case, castle rather than in a grand, pretentious hotel. The Etruscan mysteries began deep in these green hills in Maremma, the heart of Tuscany, under a starlit sky. Castello di Vicarello offers all the exclusive comforts and services you expect from a luxury hotel all set amidst breathtakingly beautiful grounds. Roses, lavender, jasmine and countless more native flowers fill the air with their blooms and there are ows of centuries-old lemon, olive and pear trees, cultivated on the grounds since Roman times, yield wonderful fruit. From the minute you arrive at Castello di Vicarello, you will feel at home. Within these ancient, restored walls guests will feel the welcoming, comforting touch of the owners, Aurora and Carlo Baccheschi Berti. We loved the oil lamps, lit while we had supper, leading us to our room adding to the medieval feel and romantic charm.

Accommodation

Open all year, Castello di Vicarello has 5 suites (2 can sleep 6 people) and is the ideal place for those who long to return to nature, beauty and tranquility and be surrounded by history & life. The rooms at Castello di Vicarello have been decorated with unique pieces of antiques and art that the owners love - all collected by them during their years spent living and travelling around the world, from Asia to South America to Italy and all points in between. The soap in the bathrooms is hand-made on site using the best herbs and olive oil. The luxury bedlinen is different in all of the suites - some from Italy, others from Asia, all utterly divine.

Activities

The new hillside spa with views across the Tuscan hills & valleys is now open and offers Ayurvedic massages, sauna, hammam and hot tub. Two swimming pools are integrated into the grounds: an infinity pool overlooking the entire valley, and a second one, very private, nestled discreetly amidst a grove of olive trees & lavender. Get up early enough and you can hunt for eggs with Carlo. Or help him pick from among the 1,500 plants; the artichokes are served raw, stuffed, or fried, along with homemade pasta and bread during the Spring.

Dining

At Castello di Vicarello. wine & food are all in keeping with the ambience and highest standards of taste and beauty. Much of the food is grown on the grounds. Everything is cultivated according to traditional methods as well as strict organic guidelines. All of it makes for creative, unforgettable dishes. Tuscan tradition rules in the kitchen, and only the best and freshest cheeses, fruits, meats, bread, oils and other ingredients are used. Breakfast is a rustic affair served in the pretty courtyard.

Rates

Rates at Castello di Vicarello are per day on a B&B basis and includes full breakfast and taxes. Also included is soft drinks and minibar. Half board (with dinner), plus Euro 55-70 per person per day.
