Crown at Woodbridge - Suffolk, England

About this Chic Retreat

The Crown at Woodbridge is a townhouse boutique inn nestled in Woodbridge, a quaint market town on Suffolk's coast. The 17th-century façade belies the contemporary chic interiors designed by Chelsea's David Bentheim, who is also responsible for the classy design of the gourmet restaurant & bar. Woodbridge, where traditional shops sit comfortably by chic boutiques, antique shops, cafes and bars, is perfect for a relaxing British coastal break.

Accommodation

Each of the 10 en-suite rooms at The Crown at Woodbridge have been individually styled by Bentheim and are luxurious & modern with a distinctly riverside feel. The style is simple, white walls, slate grey fabrics, black & white portraits and white wood furniture all nurture a feeling of calm and relaxation, and the soft luxurious furnishings, plump goose-down pillows, thick mattresses and soft cotton linens make for a good night's sleep. There is a strong emphasis on comfort and the en-suite bathrooms have under floor heating, baths and showers and are kitted out with French organic toiletries. All rooms have tea & coffee makers, desks and TVs.

Activities

Right by the River Deben, The Crown at Woodbridge is a great starting point for walks along the river, or a day out boating and there are a number of yacht clubs in the area. This luxury bolthole is situated on the main high street, The Thoroughfare, where boutiques, cafes and bars are close to hand, and some great shopping can be done. There is a well-renowned farmers market there twice a month.

Just across the River Deben is the famous National Trust property where two Anglo-Saxon burial sites were found, Sutton Hoo. The Sutton Hoo exhibition is a must for anyone interested in British history and there are a variety of events from wildlife & nature walks to Anglo-Saxon themed events that will interest adults & children alike. This beautiful area is great for walking & hiking. Aldeburgh, famous for its music & art festivals and the best fish & chips in England is just 20 minutes away and Snape, renowned for its theatre & musical performances as well as great shopping at the Maltings, is even closer.

Dining

Chef-Patron Stephen David draws his inspiration for The Crown at Woodbridge's menu from the wealth of local Suffolk produce close by, using Suffolk Gold & Blue cheeses from Jason and Katherine Salisbury's Guernsey herd in Coddenham, oysters from Pinney's of Orford and the Nash family's chickens from Sutton. Stephen's style of gutsy cooking is simple but refined, both in words and on the plate, taking these earthy flavoursome ingredients and doing just enough to show them off at their best.

A sample menu might start with crispy lamb sweetbreads, curried celeriac puree, apple and mint yoghurt; followed by salad of Lowestoft mackerel, globe artichokes, sorrel leaves, salsa verde and gremolata; finishing with mulled plums and figs, chilli vanilla syrup, clotted cream and nut meringue

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they do a great 'half breakfast' for those who fancy something cooked in the morning but don't want to go the whole hog.

The design of this 2AA Rosette restaurant is equally important and Bentheim has created 4 distinct areas including a paprika red dining room at the front where William Scott prints adorn the walls and the light & airy second room with whites & greys and an etched glass mural screen designed by Alison Reese. The bar serves some of the best Suffolk draught beers alongside Aspalls cyder and a great wine list. In the bar area there is a large table for groups and a fireplace with an invitingly large sofa.
