An island off the south-eastern coast of India, Sri Lanka is a unique, special travel destination. Influenced by a variety of cultures and emerging from decades of unrest, Sri Lanka is rapidly emerging as a place to take a breath and step back into a bygone world of temples, busy markets and stunning jungle scenery. An island that rewards exploration, we highly recommend you make the time to discover this wonderful place.
When to go
The best time to visit the west and south coasts of the island is December to March, while the best time to visit the east and north coasts is from April to September. Essentially, Sri Lanka enjoys year-round warm temperatures, but if in doubt, check with our helpful staff via live chat.
Where to go
Visit the Temple of the Tooth near Kandy in the centre of the island, supposedly holding one of the Buddha’s teeth. Spend some time with baby elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, also near Kandy, to the west..Catch a wave on one of the many surf beaches around the island. Hike through one of the many national parks, marvelling at the pristine jungle. Sun yourself by the pool during the hottest hours of the day!
Food and Drink
Sri Lankan cuisine is fiery, appropriate for an island that was once famed for its spice trading. Expect to come across a lot of curries, featuring chicken, fish, goat or beef. Coconut is also a staple ingredient, mixed in rice. Sri Lankans love their sweets and expect to be served one after a main. To eat authentic Sri Lankan cuisine in stunning surrounds, we recommend the highly-acclaimed Lunganga (Lunuganga Estate,
Dedduwa). For those who enjoy seafood in more contemporary surrounds, Ministry of Crab (Old Dutch Hospital, Fort, Colombo) is considered one of the 50 best restaurants in the world.
As an emerging holiday destination, millions of dollars have been pumped into the Sri Lankan economy to develop nightlife for the growing tourist crowds. For the discerning traveler, we recommend the Curve Bar (50/1, Park Street, Colombo) for its tapas, live music and cool cocktails, while the Cricket Club Cafe (12, Flower Road, Colombo) is a great place to kick back and lounge, nursing a long, cool drink.
