Looking for a boutique hotel in Spain? Lulu has enjoyed collecting these chic hotels and private villas in Spain and wants to share these little hidden gems with you. From hip Spanish haciendas in the rolling countryside to beachside luxury hotels in Marbella, the Chic Retreats collection of boutique hotels in Spain has something for everyone. So whether you’re after a regal mansion in rural Andalucia or the low-down on luxury hotels in Seville, Lulu’s pick of best boutique hotels in Spain is second to none.
Ibiza has long been a favourite holiday destination both for partygoers who make a beeline for the iconic nightclubs of the south and those who want to discover the less-developed, rugged coast of the north. For the best of both worlds, stay at Cas Gasi, one of our boutique hotels in Spain which is a former farmhouse, right in the centre of the island. Just a few minutes’ from the hotel you can discover the quaint villages of Sant Rafel and Santa Gertrudis, while gorgeous sandy beaches such as Las Salinas, Cala Conte and Benirras, are a 15 minute drive away. At Cas Gasi itself, the restaurant serves up a Mediterranean menu with vegetables taken from its own organic plot and the spa includes a Finnish sauna, a private open-air yoga and pilates deck. Also not far from San Rafael and equally ideally located is one of Lulu's favourites Hotel Rural Es Cucons, a charming country house hotel in Ibiza with 14 rooms and suites, an adorable restaurant and a spa area.
Tenerife, Menorca and Mallorca
We have also found lovely boutique hotels on Spanish islands Tenerife and Mallorca. Hotel San Roque, a luxury family run hotel in Tenerife, is set in a former 18th-century manor house, in the northwest traditional fishing village of Garachico. Rooms at Hotel San Roque have colour-washed walls and eclectic furniture; there’s a swimming pool, sauna and tennis courts nearby and bikes that can be borrowed to explore the countryside. Our most popular boutique hotels in Mallorca include Cases de Son Barbassa which is surrounded by forest and overlooks the bays of Cala Mesquida, Cala Agulla and Cala Ratjada. The landscape is stunning and there are golf courses and tennis courts nearby. The unspoilt island of Menorca was a frequent holiday location for Lulu when she was little but of course there wasn't a boutique hotel to be found anywhere in Menorca in those days! For some peace and quiet and an adults-only holiday do book the oh, so pretty Biniarroca hotel owned by talented artist Lindsay Mullen. For a child-friendly, eco-chic option and only 15 minutes from the airport try Sant Joan de Binissaida a little gem which also has its own restaurant.
If you want to combine a beach setting with the atmosphere of a buzzing city, you can’t beat Barcelona. In the centre, La Rambla is the famous, mostly pedestrianised boulevard that runs from Plaça Catalunya down to the sea. It’s very touristy so once you’ve wandered down it, head instead to see some of Gaudi’s extraordinary legacy which includes the surreal Park Guell and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Basilica de la Sagrada Familia (which was only a quarter complete when the Catalan architect died at the age of 76).
When you’re feeling weary from sightseeing, why not book into family-owned Barcelona boutique hotel Primero Primera. You’ll be made to feel totally at home: there’s an honesty box for drinks and a library full of books on the area for you to read. Primero Primera is located in the Tres Torres district (10 minutes from the city centre) and has plenty of restaurants to choose from nearby. Some of the best include Spanish restaurant Dos Torres, set in a modernist villa and non-touristy Catalan restaurant St Remy: both have tables outside in gardens in the summer.
Another key Spanish city is Seville in Andalucia. Known for its flamenco and Moorish architecture there’s plenty to see, from the 15th-century cathedral to the fortified Alcazar Palace (the gardens are gorgeous too). Just two minutes walk from the Plaza del Duque is boutique hotel Casa Romana ideally positioned for both business and pleasure. The flamenco museum holds classes and demonstrations while the best area for shopping is around Calle Sierpes which runs down to La Campana. Wander round the picturesque Santa Cruz district and then for dinner, head for Restaurant Egana-Oriza next to the wall of the Alcazar Palace and near to the historical Lope de Vega theatre. The menu changes seasonally but typical dishes could include lobster salad with truffle vinaigrette and steak tartar.
Or, for something more casual, try El Rinconcello, where you can choose between sitting in the restaurant or standing to eat the superb tapas, using old barrels to rest your plates on. Your tapas order - spinach with chickpeas, cod in tomato sauce, white anchovies, Iberian cured ham, say - is chalked up on the bar. From there it’s less than two hours drive to one of our favourite boutique hotels in Spain, award-winning Almohalla 51 in the ancient town of Archidona. Consisting of 5 rooms with thick stone walls, wooden beams and antique tiles, there are also shaded patios and terraces and a plunge pool. You can potter round the town itself and visit nearby cities such as Cordoba, Granada and Malaga. In the evenings, take your pick from local restaurants such as Restaurante Escua, which serves great steaks and Bar Central, the oldest bar in town which is renowned for its tapas.
Finally a hip hotel in old town Marbella, The Town House is a contemporary and private boutique hotel. Beautifully designed, the interiors are fresh and cool giving a feeling of space and light.
