Borgo Alveria - Sicily, Italy

About this Chic Retreat

Borgo Alveria is a small luxury hotel in Noto Antica, close to Siracusa in Sicily. Built on the site of an ancient monastery, just 700 m from the Porta Aurea of Noto Antica, the restored farmhouse has been painstakingly restored to reveal the original amber-coloured stone of the 18th-century farmhouse, surrounded by orchards, gardens and 19 hectares of land. Interiors blend elegant contemporary features and design with the original features to romantic effect, while outside, guests can enjoy use of the outdoor pool and solarium and enjoy the views. For dinner, look no further than Borgo Alveria's gourmet restaurant, where great seasonal food with an inventive mix of Sicilian & international styles can be enjoyed in the atmospherically lit dining room where stonework, soft lighting and ceramics create a wonderful dining experience. Explore the UNESCO designated ancient ruins of Mount Alveria, walk in the verdant countryside or simply lie back in the hammocks enjoying the peace and quiet.

Accommodation

There are 12 individually-designed rooms at Borgo Alveria, decorated with a mix of Sicilian antiques and contemporary design furniture, with mirrors, chandeliers and dashes of fuchsia pink and lime green silks offsetting the original stone work and lava stone floors. The Classic Rooms have a cosy ambience, while the Superior Rooms are a little more spacious with large artist-designed showers and views over the gardens and pool. The Deluxe Rooms are extremely spacious with design-led furnishings such as Kartell lamps and Japanese bath tubs with "waterfalls". All rooms have designer en-suite bathrooms with showers, hairdryers, luxury bath products and towels, air-conditioning and LCD TV with Sky and all guests are receive a VIP treatment, greeted with flowers and fruit.

Activities

This small boutique hotel has a lovely outdoor swimming pool & solarium where guests can relax and watch the sunset over the orchards. Set on 19 hectares of part landscaped, part wild estate, Borgo Alveria is a wonderful place for nature walks or a day reading in one of the colourful hammocks. Mount Alveria has a rich history, with the ruins of the ancient city of Noto, destroyed in the 17th-century earthquake, and a rich heritage, including archeological evidence of the Sicilian necropolis and ruins from the Hellenistic, Pre-Christian, Jewish, Byzantine, Arabian, Norman Renaissance and Baroque eras. Guests can also visit the present-day Noto Antica, just 500 m away, or take a trip to Noto town, 10 km from this chic retreat. Take a drive down the southeast coast to discover the famous Baroque towns of Scicli and Modica, the Cava Grande Natural Reserve and the stunning beaches of Oasi Faunistica of Vendicari.

Dining

The cherry on top is the Borgo Alveria Restaurant where head chef David prepares fresh, gourmet meals using locally-sourced, high quality produce, with meats and cheeses from local farms and vegetables from a neighbouring farmer's organic gardens. He learnt from the best, with traditional dishes inherited from his mother and grandmother and he has combined his knowledge of Sicilian specialities with ideas picked up on his travels. We recommend tucking into this risotto if it appears on the menu during your stay. All of this can be enjoyed in the atmospheric dining room where stone walls, wood-beam ceilings, archways and candlelight provide the backdrop for these beautifully presented dishes. A delicious breakfast buffet with homemade products such as cakes, biscuits, croissants, jams, local cheeses, yoghurt, eggs and cold cuts is laid out in the breakfast room each day.
