Hacienda de San Antonio - San Antonio, Mexico
About this Chic Retreat
Hacienda de San Antonio is a luxury hotel in Colima, Western Mexico. This 19th-century manor was built by a German planter & his Mexican wife and sits in 470 acres of land with beautiful Alhambra-inspired landscaped gardens watered by a working aqueduct. Among the lush greenery are fig trees and blue agave, the plant used to make tequila, Mexico's national drink. This beautiful casa fits perfectly with the natural surroundings, with a warm, earthy palette of terracotta reds and coco browns, and art from some of Mexico's finest craftsman decorates each luxurious suite and living room. Within the estate is an opulent chapel which stands as a remembrance of the Hacienda's survival during an eruption from the active volcano, Volcán de Fuego.
Part of a 5,000-acre working ranch, guests have much to explore including the coffee plantation, cheese factory & organic farm and the estate is great for walking and nature watching as well as simply relaxing by the outdoor pool and out on the terraces with a spring-time air all year round. Hoteliers Goffredo & Alix Marcaccini, daughter of Sir James Goldsmith who formerly owned this sumptuous retreat, have created a haven in the highlands of Mexico, along with their beach estate, Cuixmala, where luxury and a strong focus on great service means guests are sure to feel right at home.
This fabulous property is also available for exclusive rental.
Accommodation
There are 25 individually-decorated suites at the Hacienda de San Antonio, including 3 spacious Grand Suites. Decorated in natural hues with an array of crafts from Mexico's leading artisans, rooms are warm & inviting with carved wooden furniture, plump seating, fireplaces and elegant touches from intricately painted vases and lamps to extravagant mirrors which lend a grand feeling to these beautifully-designed rooms. The ground-floor suites lead out to the courtyard garden and up the volcanic-stone staircase, the suites have balconies with spectacular views of the gardens or volcano. All rooms have large king-size or double beds, Satellite TV, complimentary WiFi and en-suite bathrooms with baths & showers, and the Grand Suites have 2 large bathrooms. All en-suites have luxurious bath products using the most exclusive natural & organic oils presented in hand-blown glass bottles.
Activities
There are few opportunities to get up close to an active volcano so make the most of Hacienda de San Antonio's expert local guides and take a tour around the granite precipices with views over the hacienda and mountains. The Hacienda guides also lead excursions to Guadalajara by plane or to the colourful town of Tlaquepaque where guests can pick up some great craft souvenirs from the numerous boutiques. Guests can also arrange a trip by the hotel's chartered private plane or explore the area by horse or mountain bike and there are plenty of bird species in the area for a pleasant day birdwatching.
In addition to the chapel, this grand hacienda has an outdoor ampitheatre often used for theatrical & musical performances, a library stocked with interesting books on Mexican art and a variety of fiction & non-fiction books, a roof-top lounge with a large TV and a boutique / dining room filled with regional arts & crafts with an open-fireplace made from volcanic stone. Guests can relax by the heated outdoor swimming pool, take a massage on the terrace or work up a sweat on the tennis courts, and with Mexico's stunning beaches an hour & a half from the property, guests can spend the day by the sea before returning for an evening cocktail in the gardens.
Dining
Dine outdoors, by the open fire in the club room or in the romantic candlelit restaurant. Hacienda de San Antonio serves Mexican-European cuisine from tacos to tamales made with organic ingredients from the ranch including fruit & vegetables, meats and cheeses. All meals can be taken anywhere in the hotel, so choose your favourite spot. The Yellow Bar serves a mean margarita, a great pre-dinner treat made with homemade mango grappa.
