Le Logis de Puygaty - Poitou-Charentes, France
About this Chic Retreat
Le Logis de Puygaty is a charming chic retreat in Chadurie, South Charente. The welcoming owners, Max & Pierre, have restored this 15th-century manor house, retaining most of the original features, stonework walls, wood-beamed ceilings and sourcing gorgeous antiques to clothe the outhouses, barn & cottage. With a real eye for brocante, these interesting furnishings work well in the country-chic interiors with a few contemporary twists such as the troughs-cum-sinks and old wooden doors now tabletops. Homey yet grand, chandeliers and designer chairs sit comfortably by old farm tools and rustic fireplaces, and as most guests are likely to want to take it all home, they have opened a boutique & bar with some of the pieces found on Max & Pierre's travels, antiques and artworks sourced from flea markets around the region.
Chadurie is a great point from which to explore Charente, Cognac, Limoges & Bordeaux, while this romantic retreat is perfect for simply relaxing away from it all with a glass of local wine by the outdoor pool or one of Pierre's 4-course feasts. Le Logis de Puygaty are in the Michelin Guide for France 2010, so book now to avoid disappointment.
Accommodation
There are 3 rooms in the outhouses of Logis de Puygaty, and a 1-bedroom cottage, which offers an extra dose of privacy and independence. All of these rooms have exposed stone-work walls, beamed ceilings and tiled flooring, with a mix of antique wooden furnishings, rustic metalwork and bold contemporary seating, all of which has been seamlessly put together by the designer-owners who have found many eye-catching pieces for these luxurious rooms.
All of the bedrooms in the outbuildings overlook the courtyard and are named after former inhabitants of the manor such as François de Lâge, the original owner who was an advisor to King Francis I. Each has an en-suite bathroom with shower, bathrobes, luxurious Bienvenue bath products, a fridge, flat screen TV, DVD/video player, iPod with a library of music and CD/Cassette player. Twins or king-size beds (using a bridge so no uncomfortable gap) are available in every room, all fitted with the finest linens, and the Pierre d'Arceluz bed has a white canopy which hangs from the ceiling by large hooks, once used as meat hooks and now unrecognisably transformed like many of the pieces in this magnificent manor.
The Maison d'Amis is a romantic cottage with a mezzanine bedroom, private living room with a working wood-burning fireplace for cosy nights in, a fully-equipped kitchen and bathroom.
Activities
Le Logis de Puygaty is perfect for a romantic retreat. Sit in the lounge by the open fire with Pierre & Max's affable hounds and be sure to make the most of your hosts' local knowledge. They are happy to recommend activities in the area from cooking classes at Bachelier Fois Gras, their near neighbours, to good cycling routes - they have 2 mountain bikes for guests. The country location is great for hiking & jogging and there are tennis courts a short drive away.
Sample some of the regional wines and Cognac lovers can visit the region's distilleries such as Rémy-Martin, Hennessy and Camus. The area is also rich in medieval and gallo-roman sites and is close to Bordeaux and Limoges, famous for its porcelain production. Check out some of the local festivals, with many throughout the year, including the Circuit des Remparts Antique Car & Rally in September and Les Gastronomade Food Festival in November. After all that exploring, guests can relax in the outdoor swimming pool, take a romantic walk along the woodland path or find a peaceful reading spot in the lounge or gardens to read or talk with new friends.
