La Badia di Orvieto - Orvieto, Italy

About this Chic Retreat

Steeped in history and legends, La Badia di Orvieto, now a small charming hotel, was built in the 6th-century as an Abbey where many important men including Cardinal Cusano, Barberini and Altieri visited, worshipped and stayed.  The structure of this ancient Abbey remains today and has been sympathetically restored and converted into a family-run hotel with 18 rooms and 9 suites.  It is a rare experience for guests to stay in one of the oldest Abbey's in the world surrounded by the verdant hills and vineyards of Umbria.  Given the history surrounding the hotel it is no wonder that it is a popular place for weddings and honeymoons.

Accommodation

The beautifully designed 18 rooms and 9 suites at this charming hotel have beautiful views of Orvieto and the surrounding Umbrian countryside.  Each of the en-suite rooms are equipped with modern technology and traditional Italian furnishes.  The rooms do vary in size due the historical nature of the building.

Activities

Orvieto is just a few minutes away bay car and is one of Umbria's loveliest towns to visit during your stay.  Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy and it is easy to see why from the nearby olive groves and surrounding vineyards. On hot sunny days relax by the swimming pool and enjoy the views.  For those looking for some gentle exercise and perhaps friendly competition there is an astro turf tennis court in the gardens.

Dining

Dining at the restaurant is a must.  It exemplifies Italian traditions both in terms of hospitality and recipes handed down through generations. Enjoy home made salami, local cheeses and mouth watering Umbrian dishes which include include home made fettuccine, taglionlini with black truffles, roasted baby pig, rosemary foccaccia and an abundance of vegetables. Umbria is famous for its emerald-green extra virgin olive oil (first cold pressing of course!) and if your hand luggage permits do try and take some home with you.  The red wine is full-bodied and delicious, perfectly complementing the robust dishes and the white wine is of course Orvieto Classico, clean, crisp and very refreshing.   Orvieto too has some charming restaurants and an evening in the town is recommended to soak up the atmosphere.
