Between the sea and the mountains, at the mouth of the French Riviera, Nice has a lot going for it - it’s a case of the name saying it all! This is a beautiful city, full of sights and blessed by sunshine, ideal for a short getaway. It also makes a perfect base for exploring the many beautiful natural environments a short drive away.
Where to go
Nice is a city of squares, around which are located many different cafes and restaurants. Wander about, pick the most appealing and enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the world go by. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, watching the waves come in, or hop over onto the sand and soak in some sun. Head in to the Old Town to see the city’s beautiful cathedral, Sainte-Marie et Sainte-Réparate de Nice and find some of the best ice cream makers the city have to offer (it’s a big deal here). Visit art galleries full of the work of artists such as Chagall and Matisse, who came to the city because of its wonderful, bright light. Shop the boutiques near the seafront for some very, very chic fashions.
Food & Drink
Food in Nice is quite similar to the cuisine of Provence, with a few distinguishing features. You will come across the zucchini flower, that forms the basis of quite a few dishes. You will also see places selling ‘Socca’, a sort of chickpea pancake. Salad Nicoise, consisting of tomato, hard-boiled eggs, anchovies and olives is probably the most well-known local dish. For a real local Nicoise treat, try La Marenda () for dishes prepared by a Michelin-star chef. Be aware though - there’s no reservations and no credit cards. Very much on the other end of the scale, Le Chantecler (37 Promenade des Anglais), the Hotel Negresco’s 2-star Michelin restaurant. This is truly one for an epic indulgence - think amazing food, theatrical presentation and decor straight out of Versailles.
Nice, understandably, has a very, very busy nightlife scene. The pretty young things and super rich often make an appearance in the seaside bars for the paparazzi. Elsewhere, nightclubs and super cool bars jostle for the custom of those who flock here in the summer months. To sip champagne in style, you may enjoy L'effervescence (10 Rue de la Loge), the city’s only champagne bar. For a little jazzy Old Town fun, try Les Distilleries Idéales (24 Rue de la Préfecture), with its lovely terrace views and funky ambience.
