Riad Meriem - Marrakech, Morocco
About this Chic Retreat
Riad Meriem is a small charming riad located in the heart of Marrakech's bustling medina. Its soft palette of greys and aubergines and tasteful collection of eclectic artwork reflect the signature style of owner Thomas Hays, a noted New York interior designer whose work has appeared on the covers of glossy magazines including Design Times, New York Times, Luxury Homes and New York Living. Although the rooms are decorated with Hays' own fine photography and paintings sourced from across the world, guests will never forget for a minute that they are in Marrakech as local craftsmen have restored the luxury riad using traditional Tadelakt techniques. Afternoons are often whiled away on the elegantly-planted roof terrace or in the shade of the cascading bougainvillea in the central courtyard. Thanks to lighting installed by the lantern-maker to the King of Morocco, Riad Meriem takes on the allure of 1001 Arabian Nights after dark.
Accommodation
All 5 suites at Riad Meriem have large, comfortable hand-made double beds with luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets and fabulous signature lighting courtesy of the lantern-maker to the king. Mod cons include stereos with ipod docks and Bose speakers and telephones. Star, Red and Matisse are the most decadent suites as they have cupboards and baths made from traditional Moroccan plasterwork or Tadelakt. The fact that none of the rooms have locks adds to the home-from-home feel of this luxury riad. Guests need not fret as all the suites have safes for valuables.
Activities
The main attraction at Riad Meriem is relaxation. Guests can soak up the sun on the roof terrace and cool down in the plunge-pool in the central courtyard. The British manager Cyrus has plenty of suggestions for spa treatments ranging from traditional hammams to more conventional Western-style massages and facials. WIFI is available throughout this luxury riad and there's no need to bring your laptop as there's one at the disposal of the guests. There is also a wide range of activities that can be arranged for the more adventurous guests including tennis, golf and jet-skiing.
Dining
Riad Meriem offers traditional Moroccan dishes served at dinner which must be ordered in the morning. If you're heartily sick of tagine, Cyrus can suggest popular and little-known restaurants to suit every taste and budget. Riad Meriem stocks an excellent selection of wines and beers which is quite a rarity in Marrakech as a licence is notoriously difficult to procure.
