Almohalla 51 is the newest Chic Retreat to open in Andalucia and officially the best B&B in Andalucia (quite a feat as there are 1500!). Made from two ancient houses in the historic heart of Archidona, Andalucia this charming 5 room boutique hotel is quirky, a little wonky and full of antique tiles, surrounded by thick stone walls and wooden beams. David and Myles have restored every room exquisitely creating a stylish canvas dotted with amusing little touches and the 5 rooms are all different sizes and face in different directions.
Head to the hills and breath in the smell of pine whilst brushing against the trees or enjoy a picturesque drive to one of Andalucia's cities, Malaga is only 45 minutes away. Bordering on the Granada Province, the town of Archidona which goes back as far as prehistoric times, sits at the very centre of Andalucia, 660 metres above sea level and and is home to many monuments and places of historic interest.
Rafting and white water rafting is 20 minutes away in Cuevas San Marco and horse riding for all levels can be organised at the local stables. Golf is just 20 minutes away and tennis only 10 minutes (Almohalla 51 can lend you some rackets). The little pool is in the walled garden with lovely views and is the perfect spot to enjoy a book or snooze.
Breakfast is a family affair with everyone sitting at one big table. David and Myles don't do things by halves and breakfast is no exception with steaming pots of coffee, smoothies, fruit, local meats and cheeses as well as eggs (however you like). Some of the local specialities include Gazpacho, "Gachas de Mosto" (sweet pancakes with grape juice and nut mix filling), and "Guiso de patatas" home made potato stew. Some of David and Myles favourite places to eat and drink nearby include:
Bar Central - the oldest bar in town with a traditional well balanced tapas menu. Try the berenjas con miel deep fried aubergines drizzled in cane honey Arxiduna - housed in the caves which make up part of Plaza Ochavada, Arxiduna has a more modern menu, including a delicious goats cheese salad Restaurante Escua - with beautiful views and sunsets this is on the edge of town and serves great steaks Picasso - Picasso serves pizzas alongside some Spanish favourites Las Viñas - just outside of town, with roaring fires in winter, the leg of lamb here is amazing! Restaurante Montepaloma a traditional inn serving simple local dishes
Each of the 5 rooms (complete with a simple, but chic bathroom) at Almohalla 51 are full of character and each face a different direction. Some have views across the roof tops, others look across the mountains or terraces but all have been beautifully restored and renovated with a classic and contemporary style giving the feeling of a tranquil retreat.
At the front of the house and looking across the roof tops towards town, this is one of our larger rooms. It has a soaring timbered ceiling and an open ensuite with separate walk in shower and bath.
A brass bed head and dark wood furniture give this room a sense of traditional elegance. The room has a large double bed, seating and an iPod docking station with radio.
Overlooking the house’s secluded terraces and the woods leading up to the Sanctuary, Room 2 can be arranged as a twin or double. Its beamed ceiling, rolling stone wall and wicker rocking chair make this our most cosy and intimate bedroom.
The ensuite has a bath with shower over, and there is also an iPod docking station with radio.
Tucked away at the back of Almohalla 51, Room 3 feels like a little house within the house. Set over two floors, it has a spacious shower room with walk-in shower and dressing area on the ground floor. Stairs lead up to a large light-filled bedroom with views across the church spires to the sierra beyond – it’s particularly stunning at sunset. A real sanctuary.
The room has twin beds but can be used as double and also has an iPod docking station with radio.
Room 4 looks out over the quiet street at the front of Almohalla 51 and is one of our largest bedrooms. There is a wrought iron king-sized bed, seating and an open ensuite with bath and shower over.
The room also has an iPod docking station and radio
This tranquil room looks out onto the hotel’s roof top and small internal patio. The large double bed has a traditional iron bed head and there is a raised seating platform for tucking away with a book. The stone clad ensuite has a walk-in shower with rain head.
There is also an iPod docking station with radio.
