About this Chic Retreat

Solar Do Castelo is a small luxury hotel set within the walls of St. George's Castle, in the heart of Lisbon. The only hotel within the grand walls, this former 18th-century palace is set on the site of the former Alcacova Palace kitchens. Some medieval remains are still intact, such as the original cistern, now used as a museum. This chic retreat combines elaborate design with the rationalist Pombal style which arose after Lisbon's great earthquake in 1755. Built a decade later, the mansion is a classified Historic Building which has been thoughtfully restored for the discerning traveller. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the courtyard and garden before exploring the hill-top St. George.

Accommodation

Solar Do Castelo has 14 individually decorated rooms, furnished with a contemporary take on medieval style. All rooms are en-suite, with either baths or showers, Molton Brown bath products, towels, bathrobes & slippers. In addition, each room has air-conditioning, flat screen Satellite TVs, DVD/CD players & hairdryers and guests can choose between queen, double and twin rooms. Some rooms have balconies that overlook the pretty courtyard.

Activities

Leading up from the courtyard of Solar Do Castelo is the castle itself, which towers above Lisbon offering wonderful views over the city and the Tagus river. Take a walk down the famed Alfama steps that take you through old Lisbon and wander the castle grounds to find some great traditional arts & crafts production and good souvenirs. For golf, there are a choice of courses nearby and your hosts will arrange fees on request. Back at Solar Do Castelo, guests can relax in the central living room with a book from the multi-lingual library or take tea out in the courtyard by the fountain. Chapito, at Costa do Castelo, has a lively cultural scene offering a sushi bar, jazz café, live music, film and exhibitions. Solar Do Castelo's medieval cistern now houses a museum showing the medieval objects found during the renovations.

Dining

Breakfast is served in the dining room or out in the courtyard with a buffet menu of breads, patisserie, jams, honey, cereals, yoghurt, fruit salad, cheeses, ham, eggs, sausages, bacon and a selection of drinks. A 24-hour room service menu is available with sandwiches, salads and snacks and guests can help themselves to drinks and snacks from the São Jorge honesty bar in the living room or have them served out on the terrace.

Rates

Rates at Solar Do Castelo are per room per night and include taxes, services and WiFi. Breakfast is charged at EUR 14 per person. Children under 2 can stay for free with breakfast in the same room as 1 or 2 adults and baby cots are free. Extra beds are available on request from between EUR 77 - 95 per night.
