Le Couvent d'Herepian - Languedoc, France

About this Chic Retreat

Le Couvent d'Hérépian is a beautifully restored 17th-century convent in the quaint village of Hérépian, Languedoc. The historic vaulted ceilings and many other original features remain intact, and the Garrigae Resort's design team have skillfully blended contemporary and classic French design, while also hinting at the convent's ecclesiastical past in this luxurious, relaxing retreat,

Accommodation

Of the 13 suites, 7 of them are south-facing and 4 of those have a terrace with far reaching views across Hérépian. Many of the suites have separate bedroom and relaxation areas and a small kitchen. Le Couvent d'Hérépian's stunning rooms were designed by the Garrigae team and the Dabadabada designers in a wonderful design scheme combining traditional styles and modern luxury. Rooms come with a flat-screen TV & DVD, pre-loaded iPod & docking station and WIFI.

Activities

The small, but perfectly formed spa uses the best organic ingredients sourced from the surrounding area. The soothing smell of the essential oils of lavender, chamomile and rose drift enticingly through the grounds and the hotel. There is an indoor relaxation pool, cooled in summer and heated in winter, where guests can relax before one of the luxury spa treatments. With 15 mineral springs, the thermal spa town of Lamalou-les-Bains is a short walk from Le Couvent and the town also has a golf course for more active guests. There are many exciting activities available in the Orb valley and Regional Park of the High Languedoc, from horse-riding and mountain biking to whitewater rafting and fishing, and with the Mediterranean close by, watersports enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice. There are 2 UN World Heritage sites in the area: the walled City of Carcassonne and the Canal Du Midi, and many interesting fishing villages and market towns to visit.

Dining

Le Couvent d'Hérépian may not have a restaurant, but guests can order 'table d'hotes' meals which are prepared by local delicatessent Michel Aninat and are made from locally sourced ingredients. The menu includes fish cooked in Cognac, chicken with morilles mushrooms, and Guinea-fowl, and the local pâtissier's mouthwatering fruit pies are a great finish to a tasty meal. For those wanting to dine out, there is an excellent local restaurant, L'Ocre Rouge, just 50 metres from Le Couvent.

There is a lovely conservatory overlooking the gardens, where relaxed guests drink coffee and gaze at the scenery. Alternatively, retreat from the Mediterranean heat in the cave bar with its vaulted ceilings or relax in the warm lighting of the Salon and peruse the interesting selection of books in the library. Le Couvent has a well-chosen wine list which serves as a fantastic introduction to the region's wines.
