About this Chic Retreat

Set in the Alkham valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Kent Downs, the setting is just right for a romantic break and this stylish contemporary hotel welcomes guests with great service and mouth-watering menu of seasonal dishes which has won the restaurant a Michelin Rising Star. Formerly the village pub, The Marquis of Granby was restored & redesigned in 2008 and has a fresh, luxurious style, the perfect resting place after a day of walking, hiking and fishing or sightseeing at the nearby Canterbury Cathedral and Dover Castle. Or perhaps continue your holiday that little bit longer on your way back from Europe with the Folkstone Channel Tunnel just 10 minutes away. The entire property is also available for exclusive rental and makes an ideal location for weddings with the promise of a fine dining throughout your stay and picture perfect moments.
Accommodation
This charming boutique hotel has just 5 chic, contemporary rooms, each with a demure palette of thoughtfully combined turquoise browns and yellows, or plaid reds and mauves, with a selection of classic prints, embroidered bedspreads, and king-size beds with pocket sprung mattresses fitted with luxury cotton sheets. Each room has a modern en-suite bathroom with either powerful showers, or in the De Pamier Suite, an additional spacious bathtub with soft towelling robes, bath towels & Temple Spa bath products provided. The De Parmier suite can also be used as a family room, with a sofa bed in the separate living room. The rooms make the most of the Alkham's vantage point overlooking the Alkham Valley and some of the rooms face out to the villages cricket pitch, said to be the smallest in England. After country walks and fine cuisine, your chic contemporary room awaits, complete with flat screen TV and complimentary WiFi although you are more than likely to drift off into a wonderfully satisfied sleep.
Activities
The Marquis at Alkham is in a great spot for those travelling to or from Europe and the coast, just 10 minutes from the Channel Tunnel and 5 minutes from the M20. Alkham Valley is extraordinarily beautiful and represents the English countryside at its best, great for horse riding, walking, hiking, fishing, sailing and cricket and there are some great golf courses just 4 miles away. Take the short trip to Canterbury for great shopping and of course, a visit to the famous Canterbury Cathedral or why not head down to England's coast such as the idyllic Whitstable to enjoy a day at the seaside. Back at the Alkham, enjoy a cocktail or fine wine from the extensive list at the bar.
Dining
The fresh, seasonal menu at the Marquis at Alkham is a real draw, with great set lunch and dinner and taster menus which change throughout the week. Dishes present a contemporary take on a British theme mixed with modern international cuisine, with dishes such as Twin baked Ashmore farmhouse cheese soufflé, sautéed wild mushrooms & Jerusalem artichoke and a pudding of dark chocolate Marquise & plum & lemon Eton mess, and on the taster menu you may find dishes such as lightly curried carrot pannacotta onion bhaji or crisp pig's trotter, cauliflower piccalilli & fried quails egg. Head chef, Charles Lakin moved to the Alkham from the Feversham Arms at Helmsley, and has brought his keen eye for great produce and wonderfully-presented food to this chic luxury restaurant with rooms. For breakfast, you can enjoy a buffet of fresh breads and croissants, home-made jams, cheeses, meats and some great hot options such as Whitstable kippers and a great full English. The restaurant is a real all-rounder, with comfortable high-backed chairs around dark wood tables and exposed brickwork, fresh white walls and contemporary lighting creating a stylish, inviting ambience.
