Sumahan on the Water - Istanbul, Turkey
About this Chic Retreat
Sumahan on the Water is a small boutique hotel overlooking the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Stylishly renovated by the Turkish-American owner-architects Nedret & Mark Butler, this former alcohol factory has been transformed into a luxurious and contemporary boutique hotel with spectacular waterfront views and attentive and friendly service. Sumahan is situated on the Asian side - just a ferry ride from Europe - in Cengelkoy which maintains much of its Bosphorus traditions with wooden houses, seaside walkways and of course, plenty of fish restaurants. This peaceful chic retreat is the perfect place to come home to after a day exploring the bustling city. Service is the name of the game at Sumahan on the Water with refreshing drinks on arrival and one of the warmest welcomes we have received. Nural is the star of the show, not only does he speak impeccable English and French, but he has answers to all your questions at the tip of his fingers.
Accommodation
All 20 of Sumahan on the Water's rooms & suites have beautiful views of the city's famous skyline across the Bosphorus. Contemporary and sleek, all rooms are individually decorated with plush seating, high-tech fixtures and eye-catching features from stone-worked walls to Eames Eiffel chairs and many rooms have modern fireplaces. The space in this converted factory has been creatively used and the split-level loft suites have second floors built from steel above the living spaces making the most of the high ceilings. The Loft Suites have their own sitting area looking out over the Bosphorus.
The spacious marble bathrooms at Sumahan have showers or baths - some have hammams - and guests can indulge in the fragrant natural soaps and bath products. All rooms have air-conditioning, Satellite TV, CD & DVD players, complimentary internet access and minibars.
Activities
Sumahan on the Water has its own private launch which can take guests on trips to Kabatas on the European side where guests can enjoy the Grand Bazaar and many gorgeous little boutiques most of which are open until 11pm. The boats from Sumahan on the Water run from 09.30 in the morning to 6.30pm. Early birds can take the morning ferry from Cengelkoy for some beautiful views of the peninsula and Cengelkoy itself is a great place to visit with its traditional Bosphorus wooden houses, waterside walks, market gardens & orchards. After a day out exploring vibrant Istanbul, guests can relax in the hammam or take a massage and The Sumahan Wellness also has an exercise area. The library has a good choice of books, particularly on Turkish art & architecture, and DVDs.
Dining
Sumahan on the Water has 2 restaurants. Kordon is an à la carte restaurant serving Mediterranean dishes and fresh local seafood and the Waterfront Terrace Restaurant has a Turkish & international menu serving delicious traditional dishes (try the Turkish meatballs). Guests can enjoy an authentic Turkish breakfast along with cereal, fruit, a breakfast buffet and made-to-order eggs. Both restaurants have terraces overlooking the Bosphorus and the Seaside Terrace is a lovely spot for a cooling drink. 24-hour room service is available.
