Hotel Paradies - Ftan, Switzerland

About this Chic Retreat

Hotel Paradies is a gorgeous boutique hotel on a sunny plateau in the lower Engadine region. Picture-postcard scenery surrounds this luxurious hideaway. With rolling green meadows in summer and crisp snowy mountain peaks in the winter months, this charming chic retreat is a peaceful & tranquil resting place amid the wild & rugged landscape. Notwithstanding the location, this chic retreat has 3 restaurants including the gourmet La Bellezza which has been awarded 2 Michelin stars, a luxury spa, excellent ski & golf courses close by, a warm & welcoming team of staff and a wonderful sense of style.

Built by the Swiss painter, Hans Walter Bayer in 1910 as his own residence, the remodelled Hotel Paradies has maintained its artistic leaning with traditional Swiss ceramics and furniture seamlessly blending with original artwork from contemporary artists and oriental carpets alongside restored antique furnishings. The exterior blends beautifully with the surroundings, with straight clean lines of concrete and wood arranged in terrace-form, reminiscent of Bauhaus style. Designed with great attention to detail, every room, lounge, stunning terrace and restaurant has a distinct ambiance and charm. This is one for foodies, adventurers, nature lovers, hikers, skiers and art lovers alike who want to experience authentic regional cuisine, architecture and village life.

Accommodation

Hotel Paradies has just 23 individually decorated rooms & suites, complete with fine fabrics from Designers Guild and Osborne & Little, bespoke furniture made of Arvenholz, the local pine wood, and a mixture of antiques, contemporary art and Bauhaus-style furniture which reflects the history of the hotel. Traditional Swiss chairs sit side-by-side with design furniture from Eeero Saarinen and the style is of modern understatement - no gold, no frills - and a sophistication derived from carefully chosen pieces and high-quality finishings. There is also a strong emphasis on materials from the region such as felt, slate, velvet, timber, marble and granite.

Beds are twin doubles with luxurious duvets and mercerised Swiss cotton sheets and to enjoy the spectacular views, each room has access to a terrace or private balcony equipped with teak deckchairs & tables. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with a bath and / or shower made of locally-sourced marble or granite and luxurious Hotel Paradies bathroom products with natural herbal scents are provided. In addition, all rooms have walk-in closets or dressing rooms, flat screen TVs, Bowers & Wilkins stereo systems, complimentary local mineral water and WiFi and an impressive selection of relaxing herbal teas.

Activities

The Hotel Paradies spa offers tailor-made or on-the-menu treatments using body wraps, hot stones and wild herbs & flowers from the meadows. The wellness area has a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam bath, caldarium & solarium for a relaxing treat and there is a sports programme as well as yoga lessons either in the gym or out in the garden in summer. Cookery courses can be arranged with the expert chefs from the hotel so guests can try and recreate some of those great dishes back home.

The Engadine is one of the most famous ski regions in Switzerland with guaranteed snow from December til April and skiing and snowboarding tours are available. There is a large snow park, the Motta Naluns ski area with 80 km of downhill runs, snowshoeing - where guests can watch an enormous variety of wild animals from deer to Alpine Ibex - ice skating, and ice hockey for the competitive. In fact, the area around the Hotel Paradies is an adventurers paradise, with a 5 km sledging slope, river rafting, archery, horse riding on Freiberger horses, canooing and kayaking, paragliding and 500 km of mountain-biking tracks. Mountain climbers and hikers will not be disappointed with over 1,000 kilometres of trails open for them. Children can learn to ski on the practice slope right in front of the hotel and there are plenty of other activities to keep them entertained.

And if all of that does not entice, there are plenty of interesting museums around including the Printing Museum in Strada, the Bear Museum in S'charl and Tarasp Castle as well as tennis courts and a challenging 9-hole golf course.
