Riad Numero 9 - Fez, Morocco

About this Chic Retreat

Riad Numero 9 is a small luxury riad in the heart of Fez's captivating medina. This restored 18th-century riad will spark the imagination as much as its ancient home, the largest intact medieval city in the world. Designer-owners Stephen & Bruno fell in love with Fez, with all its historical charm and a far cry from the tourist-centred Marrakech, and settling on this riad due to its panoramic views from the rooftop terrace, created a 3-room home-from-home with style & charm in abundance.

The carefully thought out interiors are perfectly attuned to the adventurous guests who come to traverse the sprawling streets of this urban maze, with interesting antiques & objet d'art in every corner and your welcoming hosts and staff will provide everything from the home-cooked meals of ex-restaurateur Bruno, to some Parisian café music to get the evening off to a good start. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine as the call to prayer echoed across the rooftops, we felt truly that this was our home. Riad Numero 9 is also great for exclusive rental.

Accommodation

All 3 bedrooms in Riad Numero 9 have an individual charm and there is something, often surprising, to find in every nook & cranny. Open the courtyard window-shutters in the Master Suite to find a budgie singing in its cage and in the courtyard itself, the small pool is filled with goldfish. All rooms have lounge areas and the Double Room is divided into two by a Moucharabie wood screen with a warm ambience created as the light comes in through the coloured window glass. In the Junior Suite, the beautiful French Empire-style secretary is perfect for reading & writing home. Each room has its own bathroom. Walk across the narrow corridor from the Double Room to its private bathroom with copper sink, or scrub up in the Junior Suite which has a walk-in shower and a bathroom-cum-hammam.

The Master Suite occupies the entirety of the top floor with a large tiled bathroom leading off from the living room which is furnished with twin 1930s French barbers' chairs and plenty of towels. A tower of old leather suitcases sits atop the cupboard while a pair of pince-nez by the window gives the feeling that you have stepped into the life of a well-travelled gentleman - and one who knows his style at that. Moroccan, Asian and European styles have been seamlessly tied together and much has been painstakingly restored, including the intricate painted ceiling of the master bedroom. Everything has been carefully picked out down to the bathrobes & towels and a selection of dried fruit & nuts is laid out in-room for peckish moments between meals.

Activities

Riad Numero 9 is located down a quiet side street in the medina's labyrinthine streets. With all rooms facing the courtyard, this peaceful riad is great to come home to after a day manoeuvring the souks. Stephen and his staff will provide guests with a map and some good advice on where to go. The riad is conveniently located just off of Rue Talaa Kebira and Rue Talaa Seghira (although we would recommend accepting the offer of a guide to bring you to the door when you arrive as it can be difficult to find). Wander towards the centre of the medina avoiding the loaded donkeys and explore the crowded souks. At the end you will eventually find yourself at the ancient Karaouine Mosque & University, founded in 859. Then continue on to the Nejjarine Museum of Wood Arts & Crafts which houses some fine examples of Islamic carpentry or buy some from the craftsmen themselves in the markets and crafts houses. The best plan in Fez is to simply get lost and you will always find a helpful local on hand to help you to your next stop.

Back at the riad, while away the evening up on the roof terrace which has views over the entire city, reading or talking with the hosts & fellow guests. Downstairs the cosy living room has a computer for guest use and plenty of books.

Dining

Eat breakfast up on the roof terrace, with Bruno's array of Moroccan pancakes, yoghurt, homemade jams and honey. Lunch & dinner can also be arranged in advance and Riad Numero 9's Franco-Morrocan cuisine must be sampled at least once. The wine-fridge is always full and guests are welcome to use the kitchen themselves after stocking up in the local markets. Dine on the Japanese-style sunken dining table by the goldfish-filled courtyard pool, on the terrace or in-room or try some of the local restaurants. Watch this space…Riad Numero 9 are beginning work on Bruno's restaurant which will neighbour the riad with a new garden terrace for the use of guests and diners alike.
