Glenburn Tea Estate - Darjeeling, India

About this Chic Retreat

Glenburn Tea Estate is a gorgeous luxury hotel on the grounds of a working tea plantation founded back in 1859, now owned by the Chaiwala family. The 8 spacious suites - split between 2 bungalows - are each individually decorated with grand antique beds, wonderful views and a chic country style, evocative of the natural surroundings. The area is rich in bird life and the attentive and friendly staff includes a bird expert who knows much about the flora and fauna of the region. Guests are encouraged to do as little or as much as they want in this tranquil hideaway, from relaxing with an in-room massage to hiking around the estate, river rafting and tea tasting.

As well as looking after their guests, the team at Glenburn have created a Welfare Programme helping local projects and guests are invited to contribute in any way they wish. Families are also welcome and there is plenty to explore on the estate. In addition, the Glenburn Lodge & Campsite located a few hours' hike from the hotel is a great place from which to explore the wilderness with experienced guides taking guests through forests, villages, hill stations and along rivers where they will find some stunning beaches. This 1600 acre private tea estate has its own forest, 2 rivers and 8 tea-picking villages, and is perfect for bird watching, fishing and long picnic walks. A nature-lovers paradise, this is a great retreat for couples, families or groups of friends - wander for miles and return to complete luxury at the end of a beautiful day.

Accommodation

The 8 individually-decorated suites of Glenburn Tea Estate are split between 2 bungalows - The Burra Bungalow and the Water Lily Bungalow - each with its own drawing room and dining room, gardens, verandahs and terraces. The Burra Bungalow was once home to planters and houses the dining room where romantic candle-lit suppers are held and a large living room complete with fireplace. Rooms are decorated in a light, country style, with a palette of natural colours and some wonderful floral prints. Antique furnishings can be found throughout, and The Planter's Suite has a particularly lovely turn-of-the-century four-poster bed in Spanish mahogany. This wonderful suite will transport you to colonial times with oriental figures in the Toile de Jouy furniture and old maps and prints around the walls. Enjoy views out to the hills and Sikkim from the terrace. The other suites are no less alluring, each with their own theme and spectacular views. The bedroom and living room of The Simbong Butterfly Room are divided by a muslin drape embroidered in butterflies, while wisteria adorns the wardrobe and birds and bees appear across the furnishings. Each suite has been thoughtfully conceived to beautiful effect.

All of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms with old-fashioned bath tubs with hand showers, and 5 of the suites have walk-in rain showers. On chillier nights, guests can cosy up with a hot water bottle or electric blanket and there are overhead fans to keep guests cool. For larger groups or families, some rooms have single rooms attached to the main bedroom for sleeping extra guests and the Kanchenjunga Suite has a queen-size bed in addition to the canopied king-size in the main room as well as an adjoining room, perfect for families. Hand-embroidered bed linen, towels, bathrobes, slippers, fresh fruit, fresh flowers, Darjeeling Green Tea toiletries and hair driers are provided.

Additional information

  • Neareast Airport: Bagdogra.
  • Distance from Airport: 3 hours.
  • Additional Info:
By air: There are daily Jet Airways, Kingfisher and Spice Jet flights from Kolkata (45 mins), Guwahati (30 mins) and New Delhi (2 hours) to Bagdogra. Glenburn is a three hour drive from the airport. The flight from Delhi stops at Guwahati on alternate days and guests are advised to take the direct connection (Delhi-Bagdogra-Delhi) which considerably shortens the flying time.
By rail: From Kolkata there are daily overnight trains to New Jalpaiguri station (The Darjeeling Mail operates daily and The Kanchenkanya and Uttar Banga Express operate on alternate days). Both trains take approximately 12 hours. From Delhi there is a daily Rajdhani service that takes about 22 hours. Glenburn is a 3 hour drive from the station.
Complimentary transfers in Air-Conditioned Scorpio 4wheel drive vehicles are provided, along with a picnic hamper.
Most of the journey follows the course of the River Teesta, and just before you reach the bridge that takes you across the river to Sikkim, you begin the climb up towards Darjeeling, and then drive down into the Glenburn valley. The last 15 minutes of the drive, over about 3 kms, is very bumpy, but our careful drivers try to make it as smooth as possible.
Helicopter charters are available on request.
