Accommodation
All of the 6 rooms at The Retreat Dar es Salaam are furnished with rare African artworks and antiques from the region. The 3 upstairs rooms have private wooden balconies facing the Indian Ocean and 3 overlook the outdoor pool and gardens. Beds range from king-size four-posters to twin queen-sizes, many of which are dark-wood antique Zanzibar beds, each fitted with fine linens. The Turquoise Room has a sofa bed and can be rented as a triple room. The downstairs standard rooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers while the Orange "deluxe room" and Turquoise and Golden "private rooms" have 2-man Zanzibari bathtubs. The romantic Golden Room is ideal for honeymooners and is a spacious 40 sqm. All rooms have air-conditioning and minibars, bath products come from Zanzibar and are made from natural ingredients and there is Satellite TV in the lounge area.
Activities
The Retreat Dar es Salaam is right on the beach and guests can start the day with a swim in the outdoor pool before taking a tour of Bagamoyo or Dar es Salaam city centre where guests can visit the Makonde carvers, famous for their intricate African blackwood carvings. A private car & driver can be arranged for excursions. Explore the coast by catamaran or on the hotel's private speed boat, while the adventurous can make use of the property's water skis. Diving trips to the neighbouring islands can also be organised. In the evenings, relax out on the ocean-front gazebo with a cocktail and watch the glorious sunset, cosy up in the spacious lounge or have a pre-dinner drink at the poolside terrace bar.
Dining
Dining at The Retreat Dar es Salaam is a romantic affair, with evening meals served by candlelight on the teakwood verandah. Freshly-caught fish, marinated meat dishes and locally-produced veg are served with fresh breads and a selection of fine wines. For breakfast enjoy refreshing tropical fruits and juices. Visit the Asian business district in Dar es Salaam for some great restaurants, in particular along Kisutu, Zanaki and Mkunguni streets.
Rates
Rates at The Retreat Dar es Salaam are per room per night including breakfast and 20% VAT. A single supplement of 50% per person applies and over the Christmas period (22nd December to January 2010) a supplement of USD 15 applies per person. Check-in time is 2pm and check out is 11am - the day use fee applies for use until 4 pm. Children aged 5-10 pay 50% of the full adult rate when sharing with 2 adults. Children aged 2-4 pay 30% of full adult rate. Children below 2 years are free of charge. Children aged 2-10 pay 80% of the full adult rate for a separate room.
