Linthwaite House

Linthwaite House is a small boutique hotel in Windermere, the Lake District. This luxurious retreat, set on over 14 acres of private estate, has a traditional yet unstuffy country house style and enjoys breathtaking views over Lake Windermere. Interiors blend the original features of this country retreat, which was built at the turn of the 20th-century, with modern luxuries offering the perfect hideaway for nature lovers and romantics. Visit the nearby villages of Bowness & Windermere, take long hikes and walks in the fresh mountain air, visit the places that inspired some of the UK's finest artists and return to modern British cuisine in the Linthwaite's welcoming restaurant.

Linthwaite House has a romantic ambience, with awe-inspiring views down to Lake Windermere and across to the Old Man of Coniston in the west, where beautiful sunsets can be enjoyed. Watersports enthusiasts are well-catered for in the Lake District National Park, and the surrounding mountains are great for climbing, horse-riding, hiking and walking. Linthwaite House have their own tarn (small lake) high up on the hill, where guests can take a lesson in fly-fishing and spend a sunny afternoon in the lakeside summer house. The adventurous can abseil down the incredible blue mines, go four-wheel driving on Green Lanes, explore by mountain bike or take to the tree tops with the "Go Ape" high forest walks trail where you can traverse the canopy along a wire.

There are a wealth of villages and towns in the area worth visiting such as Bowness and Windermere and a little further, Grasmere, Keswick, Kendal and Ambleside. Fans of William Wordsworth can visit his favourite homes, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount and there are plenty of heritage sites in the area including Birdoswald Roman Fort part of Hadrian's Wall. For keen golfers, the Windermere Golf Club is just a mile away and your hosts can arrange tee off times (Certificate of Handicap is needed). After a day exploring, guests can come back to a welcoming cocktail, fine wine or locally-brewed beer in the full-service bar and a relaxing in-room massage (pre-booking necessary). Guests also have complimentary access to a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, ice room and gym in a luxury spa 1 mile away and there are tennis courts available nearby in Bowness.

The Linthwaite House restaurant serves an award-winning menu of modern British cuisine devised by talented head chef, Richard Kearsley, all using fresh, local produce. For dinner, there is a multi-choice 4-course menu every evening served in the 3 gorgeous dining rooms, The Billiard, Mirror and Board rooms. Dishes could include pressing of Goosnargh duck, pistachios and prunes, sweet wine jelly and toasted brioche or pan fried fillet of red mullet, risotto of mussels, clams and cockles with bouillabaisse sauce. Vegetarians are also well-catered for and other special diets on request. A more informal menu is also served in the verandah.

Whether you need a hearty meal before a long country walk, or a sandwich to keep you going, the lunch menu has something for everyone, from the laid-back Terrace Menu, with sandwiches and favourites such as hamburger and chips (specially devised by Keith Floyd) to the 2 and 3-course menus available in the dining rooms with dishes such as braised lamb belly, tagine style couscous, tarragon and tomato jus and white chocolate and hazelnut cheesecake with blueberry compote on the menu. There is a good wine list and your hosts can find you a wine to perfectly compliment the fine food. A Ritz-style afternoon tea is also available with homemade scones, cakes and sandwiches.

For breakfast, enjoy a full English with Ayshire-style sweet-cured smoke bacon, Cumberland sausages and local black pudding, or vegetarian alternatives such as vege black pudding with caramelised onion and soft poached egg to stock up for a day of walking, or a lighter Continental breakfast with cereals, croissants, toast, fruit and freshly squeezed juice - all served in the dining room or brought to your room.
