Boutique Hotels in Bath

Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site with quaint cobbled streets, historic architecture and the famous Roman Baths, Bath in Somerset is one of the loveliest cities in England and is home to some lovely boutique hotels. For pure luxury, Chic Retreats recommends a stay at The Royal Crescent Hotel, part of the landmark 18th-century crescent designed by Georgian architect John Wood the Younger. As well as 45 unique period rooms this luxury hotel boasts the award-winning Dower House restaurant, a contemporary spa in a converted coach house and an acre of beautiful, secluded gardens. Another of our boutique hotels in Bath is Brindleys, a charming, family-owned home from home right in the heart of the city. Six en-suite bedrooms are filled with fresh flowers and chic French furniture and the breakfast, a choice of a hearty full English or a lighter continental, both made with locally-sourced products, is utterly delicious. For affordable chic try Brooks Guesthouse Bath, our newest boutique hotel in Bath just a few minutes from the Royal Crescent.

Exploring Bath

There’s plenty to explore in Bath to keep everyone happy. As well as the Royal Crescent, other outstanding buildings include The Circus by John Wood the Elder and the shop-lined Pulteney Bridge, built by Robert Adams for William Pulteney, which crosses the River Avon and is one of the most romantic spots in the city (to appreciate the bridge in all its glory, see it from Parade Gardens Park). Shoppers looking for designer labels should head to Milsom Street and the surrounding area (also home to House of Fraser and Rossiters of Bath, the south west’s version of Liberty); independent stores and antique furniture can be found on Walcot Street and if you’re here on a Saturday, don’t miss the buzzing Farmers’ Market at Green Park Station where you can pick up local cheeses, fresh bread and all kinds of other local, organic goodies to take home with you.

Of course, no trip to Bath is complete without a visit to the Roman Baths museum, Britain’s only hot springs and its surrounding ancient temple and bathing complex (during July and August it stays open until 10pm so go in the evening to avoid the crowds). Or Thermae Bath Spa, where you can bathe in the naturally warm, mineral-rich waters of the indoor Minerva Bath and the rooftop pool, which has jaw-dropping views across the city. Take afternoon tea at the Pump Room adjacent to the Roman Baths, or back at The Royal Crescent Hotel for finger sandwiches, handmade dainty pastries and scones which can be eaten out on the terrace in the summer and by roaring log fires in the library in the winter.

Where to eat

For lunch or dinner, Casanis bistro restaurant offers classic Provencale French cooking in a cosy Georgian dining room. Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen is a great option for non meat-eaters (think inventive dishes such as white onion tart with roasted potatoes and thyme pesto or truffled broccoli) while children will go crazy for the stone baked pizzas at The Stable where they can choose from the West Country Porker topped with chorizo, The Lamb Roast with Dorset lamb and Billy the Kid made with goats cheese.
