Hospederia Convento de la Parra - Badajoz, Spain

About this Chic Retreat

Hospederia Convento de la Parra is a converted convent (the nuns left in 1978) and is now a hip hotel. Hospederia Convento de la Parra is a wonderful small boutique hotel created by an energetic and dedicated young team who staff the hotel and take care of their guests with great attention. Their philosophy has been to create the most relaxing, tranquil and aesthetic space possible in this lovely old building. This small hotel has no television or radio but plenty of books and games, no air conditioning but full of wood stoves; not intended for children but adults relaxation and enjoyment. A place where you will vow to return often. Strict use of high-quality traditional materials (bed sheets and table linens) provides a feel of rustic elegance with dark terracotta floors and beamed ceilings.

The region, Extramadura, was an extremely poor un-noticed area until it was transformed by an injection of funds from the government which was also used to restore the convent. The village, La Parra, is equidistant from Lisbon and Seville (two and a half hours by car) in the South Sierra foothills, where prized Iberico pigs (producers of Iberico Ham which is supposed to reduce cholesterol levels!) feast on acorns and flowers.

Accommodation

This contemporary boutique hotel has a total of 21 rooms with en- suite bathrooms. In the old cells in the south wing, divided over two floors are 5 single and 7 double rooms. On the second floor are 2 suites and 7 double rooms. The nights are so still and peaceful and the beds so comfy that, unlike the nuns, you will enjoy a luxurious and comfortable nights sleep waking refreshed and possibly ready for early morning prayers?!

The top floor has the best light; Nos. 24 and 27, with large bathrooms and wood-burning stoves, are showpieces; for lone travelers, the singles are a rare attraction.

Activities

Activities at Hospederia Convento de la Parra include Terracotta throwing, trekking, horse-riding, paragliding or relaxing by the pool in what used to be the old orchard.

Dining

The Hospederia's restaurant has an excellent menu ideally complemented with the fast-rising wines of Dolores Morenas. The menu is chosen according to the freshest ingredients available on the day. The orange juice at breakfast is squeezed from oranges which overhang the pool.
