Kasbah du Toubkal - Atlas Mountains, Morocco
About this Chic Retreat
Kasbah du Toubkal is a stunning rural retreat in a peaceful mountain setting with views of North Africa's tallest mountain, Toubkal. Converted from an old fortified house, the former home of the local caid, this hidden gem offers homely hospitality and expert knowledge of the area from the Berbers who run it. Breathtaking views in every direction, locally made furniture and friendly service make this a great escape from the hectic pace of everyday life. There is no traffic here, no fast food restaurants, no smelly or polluted city air, just the braying of the mules, the rush of water over the rocks, the sounds of the villagers living their lives and the ethereal call to prayer from the local mosque echoing over the valleys and bouncing off the rock walls. Breathe in the fresh air, take a relaxing break in the Hammam or embark on a bracing walk in the mountains. Whatever you do, you will leave feeling refreshed and at ease.
Accommodation
Kasbah du Toubkal can accommodate 25 to 40 people or can be hired by a single group for a special occasion, from a day up to a month, depending on the time of year. Kasbah du Toubkal was rebuilt using local labour and traditional methods & materials, and the rooms of this eco-friendly lodge use local furnishings and fabrics, including carved walnut furniture. There are standard rooms, superior and deluxe rooms of which most have a terrace or balcony, and garden house suites with their own private terrace and balcony with breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape, all of which have en-suite bathrooms with either shower or bath. The Berber salons are designed in a traditional style and shift away from the hotel concept with the downstairs traditional seating area transforming into the sleeping area at night, and for those who want to fall asleep looking at the star-strewn sky, carpets can be set out on the roof terrace with sleeping sheets and mats. The Berber salons fit larger groups and have shared bathrooms. For longer treks there are some wonderful places to stay along the way. It is optional as to whether guests are accompanied by a European or local guide or stay as independent travellers.
