About this Chic Retreat
Hatari Lodge, overlooking the awe-inspiring Mount Kilimajaro is set on the edge of Arusha National Park. Formerly traditional farm buildings, the lodge has been converted into a luxurious boutique hotel with a well-conceived 60s-70s theme, harking back to the beginning of safaris in the area. This century-old lodge has a rich history, once housing the famed German actor Hardy Krueger, and named after the Hollywood movie "Hatari" that was shot in the surrounding area, and is the perfect place from which to explore the magnificent rainforests, lakes, mountains and wildlife of East Africa. Guests can also book a stay at Shu'mata Camp, the former Kilimajaro Safari Camp.
Accommodation
The biggest draw to Hatari Lodge is waking up to see a giraffe, zebra, or even cape buffalo from your bedroom window. The 9 individually themed rooms have a quirky, retro style with an emphasis on comfort. Rooms are decorated in terracottas and grass greens, with straw features, which work well with the natural surroundings. Each room has an open fireplace and large en-suite bathrooms which are also superbly styled. All bathrooms come with bathgowns, scrumptious toiletries, a roomy shower, and in some rooms, oversized bathtubs. Sit back in the spacious hexagonal bath in the Honeymoon Suite, and enjoy the romantic views of the park land from the large window.
Activities
The Hatari Lodge is the perfect location to explore the stunning plains of "Little Serengeti", the fertile Momella Lakes where flamingos wander, the Ngurdoto Crater and the Mount Meru, which towers above at 4,566 metres. The Lodge offers a 4-day climbing tour of the mountain and are happy to arrange Safaris for guests. For adventurous types, take a canoe trip and spot the buffalo at the side of the river, or sit back and relax and watch the wildlife from the game viewing platform. With such diverse bird species in the area, a special bird watching safari is also available, and with over 650 species to look for, it will certainly be a memorable experience.
Guests can also take a trip to the Kilimanjaro Masai Savannah and visit a Masai village where the elders will explain the historical background of their tribe and their traditions. Hatari guests can also book a stay at Shu'mata Camp right at the foot of Kilimanjaro, where elephants, oryx and wildebeest roam in the surrounding savannah, and included in a booking to stay at the camp are safari activities in open-topped vehicles.
Dining
Claudia and Johnny cook up Hatari Lodge's wonderful cuisine, which is served in the spacious & homely living area in the oldest of Hatari's buildings.
Rates
Rates at Hatari Lodge are per room per night and includes 3 meals a day, concession fees, community fees and taxes. Children of 0-3 years are complimentary, 4-11 year olds are charged at 50% of adult rates, 12 years and over are charged the full adult rate. Hatari Lodge offer a free room upgrade subject to availability. 25% deposit is required to confirm the booking, or 100% if booking within 35 days of arrival.

120-36 days prior to arrival: 25% deposit forfeiture. 35-8 days prior to arrival: 50% cancellation fee will be charged. 7 days or less prior to arrival: 100% cancellation fee will be charged.
