About this Chic Retreat
Mas de la Serra is a spacious luxury villa in Mataranya, Eastern Spain. This beautifully renovated 17th-century stone farmhouse has a mix of original stonework and contemporary ironwork built during the restoration process, designed to blend perfectly with the existing building. With 8 bedrooms the masia can accommodate 16-20 guests, perfect for family reunions and parties of friends, and is also available for individual room rental. Wander the 50-acre almond farm, explore the beautiful mountains, admire the view from the rooftop terraces and sit back by the infinity pool while Luis & Jenny arrange everything from activities to barbecues. Your dedicated staff are happy to take care of as much or as little as required and guests will want for nothing with a fully-stocked wine cellar, breakfast & dinner service and free use of the kitchen for those who want to prepare their own meals.
Accommodation
This chic luxury hotel has 8 individually-decorated bedrooms and can sleep from 16-20 guests. There are 5 doubles & 3 twins which can be rearranged to suit different groups with notice and a children's dormitory is available in the summer. Simple fabrics and wooden flooring & furnishings create a rustic feel blending well with the original features of the farmhouse, and some rooms feature four-poster beds. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with showers and some also have baths. The bathrooms are kitted out with luxury bath products & towels and are decorated in Moroccan tadelakt. There are 2 superior suites at Mas de la Serra. One is split-level and in the upstairs bedroom there is a gorgeous freestanding Victorian bathtub allowing guests to enjoy a relaxing bath while looking out to the mountains beyond. The second has a private sitting room with an open fire and its own terrace. The suites also have TVs. All of the rooms have spectacular views of the almond groves, limestone buttresses and pine and oak forest and guests may spot an endangered Spanish ibex among the trees.
Activities
Mas de la Serra has everything one might expect from a luxury villa and more. Relax by the outdoor pool as the sun sets over the mountains with a glass of regional wine from the extensive cellar. Then, as evening falls, refresh in the steam room before cosying up for a film in the home cinema. WiFi is available throughout the house and grounds and there is a TV room with Satellite TV & DVD player, a comfy spot for those who can tear themselves away from the panoramic views from the terraces and patios. The indoor living rooms continue the rustic feel, with an old traditional farmhouse bench in the downstairs hallway and open fires in the sitting areas.
Matarranya is a true paradise, set in the coastal mountains where the ancient kingdoms of Catalunya, Valencia & Aragon meet. For those lured by the mountains, hiking maps & guidebooks are available and mountain bikes, quad bikes and horses can be arranged for the adventurous. Hike through the forested peaks of the Els Ports gorge and take a rest in one of the plunge pools along the way. At the bottom of the valley, there is a large lake where water sports enthusiasts can kayak & windsurf and it is also suitable for fishing. The rugged landscape is also ideal for rock climbing.
Visit the surrounding medieval villages such as the walled-town of Morella and La Fresneda and take a trip to the Picasso Museum in Horta St Joan. Valderrobres has a vibrant nightlife and is a great place to go during fiestas. In the autumn, guests can help with the almond harvest or go truffle hunting in the hills.
Dining
Jenny, Mas de la Serra's Peruvian cook, makes breakfast and either lunch or dinner 5 days a week, with dishes blending local recipes with traditional Peruvian gastronomy. Enjoy a breakfast of freshly-baked bread with jams, bacon & eggs and orange and mandarin juices. Luis will arrange reservations at the best local Michelin recommended restaurants, along with trips to a nearby winery. For other meals, guests can use the fully-equipped kitchen with its original bread oven. There are 2 dining rooms or dinner can be taken out on the patios.
Rates
Rates at Mas de La Serra are per room per night including breakfast. The 8% tax is not included. Extra meals are charged at GBP 22 per person plus 8% tax. A 3 night minimum stay applies during Easter, Christmas and New Year. The property can also be rented exclusively and sleeps 16-20 people. Weekly rates are available on request to include breakfast, 5 evening meals, full concierge service & taxes and during 3 night minimum stays during Easter / Christmas & New Year, rates include dinner, concierge & tax. Mas de La Serra is unavailable for rentals between 10th January and the end of February. Reservations must be confirmed with a 50% deposit. The balance is payable 8 weeks prior to arrival. Extra services should be settled with staff directly. Insurance is recommended. Children over 3 years old are considered full occupants.
