’Too many hotels just dress a bed nicely to hide a cheap old mattress,’ says celebrity photographer Dean Freeman, who has spent much of his life struggling to sleep in so-called luxury hotels on the trail of the A-list. So when he bought Casa do Dean in Bahia, Brazil, a good night’s sleep was top of the agenda. ‘All the beds are custom made, with high-quality mattresses shipped in,’ says Freeman, ‘and there are black-out curtains, but in white for aesthetic reasons.’ Freeman had a very specific vision for his property. ‘I wanted a New York-style loft but with a Brazilian touch,’ he says, and so he did every bit of the interior design himself, sourcing, quirky lamps in Buenos Aires, retro film posters in Sao Paulo and artworks from the local area. The house, which operates like a small hotel, has two bedrooms, with an extra suite planned for early next
year, and an off-site English ‘concierge’. It is a five-minute walk from the often-secluded beaches of Arraial d’Ajuda.' Conde Nast Traveller (UK). Accommodation - 2 Rooms
This hip hideaway has 2 en-suite rooms, both with king size double beds adorned with luxurious mattresses and quality imported bed linen. An additional single bed/baby's cot are available on request for a small extra charge. The floors are white polished concrete, the high ceiling is beamed constructed using rich Brazilian woods. The furnishings are stylish, comfortable and eclectic reflecting the global connections, creativity and travels of its owner. 4 hours daily maid service is provided as well as complimentary laundry. WIFI, i-pod speaker and a DVD library are all available to guests.
Activities
Dean Freeman (owner) is happy to talk with guests about ideas for city stop overs en-route in Salvador , Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo which he knows very well. Dean is based in London, but has many years experience in Brazil and is willing to share his knowledge. Local Manager (Brian Mee) who has lived in Brazil for 8 years is able to help with local information, internal flights and advise on excursions and onward travel arrangements. Reiki, horse riding and massage can all be arranged. Arraial today has a thriving international community, four or five chic shopping centres, an amazing array of restaurants and bars - a nightlife which will extend to 24-hours if you want it to and access to some of the best beaches in Brazil.

Trancoso Another former fishing village which has become home to the rich and the famous. A long walk along the beach or a 30-minute drive inland, its charming grassed village square and church and candle-lit restaurants and famed boutiques and small shops are frequented by many international celebrities as well as by canny travellers who appreciate the charms of these two unique and captivating villages. Arraial D Ajuda the village that the house is in has great restaurants (Sushi /Italian /Fish / Argentinean/ Brazilian / Thai) and wonderful nightlife so everything is actually right on the door step!

Room Rates for 2009
Rates are per rental per night, minimum stay is 6 nights. 2 weeks minimum at Christmas and New Year, 1 week minimum during carnival. Rates during Christmas and New Year carry a premium surcharge up to an additionak 100% of the rate. There is a USD 150 service charge per booking. Special rates available for 21 nights or more.
